Opobo Kingdom Announces Historic Coronation of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, from September 18–27, 2026
The Opobo Council of Alapu, in conjunction with the people of Opobo Kingdom, has officially announced that the coronation of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, as the Amanyanabo and Treaty King of Opobo Kingdom, will take place from **Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 27, 2026**.
The 10-day historic celebration will feature a comprehensive calendar of cultural, spiritual and ceremonial activities across Opobo Kingdom.
Founded in 1870 by the legendary merchant prince, King Jaja of Opobo, and his compatriots, Opobo Kingdom remains a symbol of resilience, strategic diplomacy and rich Ibani-Ijaw cultural heritage.
Located along the coastal waters of the Niger Delta, the kingdom has maintained a distinguished place in history, celebrated for its formidable trading legacy, unwavering independence and deeply rooted traditions.
The ascension of King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, marks the beginning of a vibrant new chapter in the history of the kingdom.
As Treaty King, His Majesty inherits a legacy defined by courageous leadership, service and commitment to the people, while bringing a forward-looking vision centred on unity, cultural preservation and economic development.
“This historic coronation, which will take place from September 18 to September 27, 2026, is not merely the crowning of a king, but a celebration of our resilience, our ancestry and our enduring identity,” the announcement stated.
Revered monarchs and traditional rulers, captains of industry, prominent sons and daughters of Opobo, friends of the kingdom and distinguished guests from Nigeria and around the world are expected to attend the landmark occasion.
The event is expected to showcase the history, traditions and cultural splendour of Opobo Kingdom while formally ushering in the reign of His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI.
