Here's what every farmer should do:

โ€ข Clear the field properly: Remove w**ds, old crop residues, stones, and other debris that may compete with your crops or harbor pests.

โ€ข Improve the soil with organic matter: Mix compost, well-decomposed animal manure, or decomposed plant materials into the soil. Organic matter improves soil fertility, increases water retention, and supports beneficial microorganisms.

โ€ข Loosen the soil: Till or ridge the land to allow roots to grow deeper and access water and nutrients more easily. Avoid excessive tillage, as it can damage soil structure.

โ€ข Check soil moisture before planting: Plant when the soil is moist, not waterlogged or completely dry. This gives seeds the best chance to germinate evenly.

โ€ข Know your soil: If possible, conduct a simple soil test to understand its nutrient needs. Applying the right fertilizer or soil amendment saves money and improves yields.

When we were selecting farmland for our climate-smart agriculture project, we encountered a situation that perfectly illustrates this.
One potential site had excellent soil in some areas, but we had to reject it because the land's position meant
โœ“ Eazy access of animals to graze
โœ“ Water logging due to uphill position

This automatically meant a key livelihood for the beneficiary would be lost.
Position matters that much.

Here are Five positioning factors every farmer must assess:

โ€ข Land space โ€” affects crop spacing and density.
โ€ข Soil texture โ€” determines water retention and nutrients.
โ€ข Water deposition โ€” shows where runoff flows and waterlogging risk.
โ€ข Slope โ€” impacts erosion and water availability.
โ€ข Infiltration rate โ€” controls how fast water soaks into soil.

Understanding these factors is exactly what our work with the Youth Empowerment Fund, in partner with EU International Partnerships and Global Youth Mobilization Global Youth Mobilization ensures, making sure that empowerment is not only available but sustainable and tangible.
