Grumpily, he had walked Daniel (names have been changed) around the site. A 100/150 plot of land with a building left under construction since four years, with its molding blocks riddled with all sorts of weeds at 8 miles in Calabar, Cross River State.
Daniel wondered what the old man who had retired from active Civil Service for six years in his late sixties would bring him here for? Just as his thoughts ravaged him, the man began talking, "have you seen this plot", as though Daniel wasn't looking at the stark deadness before him, the man continued, "if you want to marry my daughter, you will have to complete this building. It cost 4 million naira to complete. I will send you the account number when you're ready".
This was his present reality after he decided to find himself a wife. He had met Ijeoma (name has been changed) two months ago. She was the ideal spectacle of beautiful, her hourglass shaped body, light skinned complexion, and of course her dealings "in za other room", where effective to spell bind Dan to a blin concession. Danny thought that he had found his dream woman and fell, madly in love.
He was depressed and feeling disconnected as he sat among friends in a bar over mugs of beer haven narrated his present predicament about his yet to be Father-in-laws' demand. Friends stepped in, asked him to let Ijeoma go; another will come. It was difficult, but he let her off.
A certain business man, let's call him Ifiok, was found lamenting over how the 700k he gave his wife for safe keeping which was to fall back on, after their marriage, could not be accounted for, by the woman, she had staked the money in some gamble after buying herself some pretty expensive jewelry. This wasn't just the case, her father had also staked her husband's TUNDRA in a business that didn't work after he asked to use the car for a while. The company he did business with, seized the truck until he, Ifiok's in-law is able to avail 5 million naira.
Two months after Daniel left Ijeoma. She landed a Prince Charming, Ifiok. It wasn't more than two months before a lavish traditional wedding was done before a more resplendent European traditional marriage followed with an expensive bridal shower and garnished looking bridesmaid train, all of these, after a heavy bride price. That marriage didn't see the light of three months as Ifiok will later go bankrupt and see his TUNDRA driven about, yet unable to do anything about it.
That would have been the fate of Daniel.
This is a true story, all happened this year in the city of Calabar.
