Peter Obi Donates N10 Million to Support Healthcare Services at Ehime General Hospital, Imo State

Ehime Mbano, Imo State, June 1, 2026 — Former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi has donated N10 million to support healthcare services at Ehime General Hospital in Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, pledging more investment in health and education as pillars of national development.

Obi announced the donation during a visit to the hospital on Thursday, where he was received by the Catholic Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. David Okechukwu Chikezie Onuoha, alongside members of the clergy and hospital management. He handed over the funds to hospital officials to support ongoing renovation and upgrade of medical facilities.

The Archbishop commended Obi for his “consistent commitment to supporting critical sectors such as health and education,” describing his interventions as “impactful and selfless”.

Ehime General Hospital, recently handed over to the Catholic Diocese for management, is currently undergoing renovation as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the area. Plans are also underway to establish a nursing school within the hospital complex to strengthen healthcare training and boost service delivery in the region.

The Diocese is expected to oversee the facility’s operations to ensure more efficient management and expand access to quality medical care for residents of Ehime Mbano and surrounding communities.

Speaking to stakeholders during the visit, Obi stressed that investment in healthcare and education remains central to national development. He said a healthy and educated population is “the foundation for economic growth and social progress” and “the bedrock of a productive society”.

Moshood Abiola Polytechnic Expels 365 Students Over Falsified Admission Documents

Abeokuta, Ogun State, June 1, 2026 — Authorities of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, MAPOLY, have expelled 365 students for gaining admission into the institution using falsified academic documents, the school announced Monday.

According to a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Yemi Ajibola, the affected students were all enrolled in various Higher National Diploma, HND, programmes. A comprehensive verification exercise on credentials submitted during admission and registration revealed they presented fake National Diploma, ND, results and forged academic transcripts from different institutions to facilitate their admission.

Ajibola said the decision “underscores the institution’s commitment to sanitising the academic system and reinforcing its zero-tolerance policy against fraudulent practices and other forms of academic misconduct”.

The polytechnic provided a distribution of the expelled students across its schools:
- School of Communication and Information Technology: 156 students
- School of Business and Management Studies: 117 students
- School of Science and Technology: 54 students
- School of Engineering: 36 students
- School of Environmental Studies: 2 students

MAPOLY Rector, Arc. Dr. ‘Koye Jolaoso, cautioned prospective applicants and admission seekers against the use of fake academic credentials. He said the decisive action reflects the 47-year-old institution’s commitment to upholding academic integrity, promoting excellence, and repositioning MAPOLY as a model of transparency, credibility, and professionalism in tertiary education.

“This decision underscores the Institution’s commitment to sanitising the academic system and reinforcing its zero-tolerance policy against fraudulent practices and other forms of academic misconduct,” Ajibola stated.

Civil Society Groups Stage Protest in Ibadan Over Abduction of Pupils and Teachers in Oyo State

Ibadan, Oyo State, June 1, 2026 — Civil society groups, teachers, and students staged a protest in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday demanding urgent government action to secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted two weeks ago in Oriire Local Government Area.

Members of the Take-It-Back Movement and Oyo State residents converged on the busy Mokola Roundabout as early as 8:00 a.m. under the banner “Bring Back Our Pupils and Teachers”. Protesters displayed banners and placards with inscriptions including “Save Our Children,” “End Kidnapping In Oyo State,” “Every Life Matters, Stop the Kidnappers,” “47 Abducted, Scared and Alone,” and “Stand Up! Speak Out!”

The demonstrators marched through parts of the city, condemning rising insecurity and calling on security agencies to rescue the victims. They accused the government of failing to protect lives and property, insisting schools should not become targets for criminal gangs.

The protest follows the May 15, 2026 attack on three schools in the Esiele and Yawota communities of Ogbomoso, Oriire LGA. Gunmen riding motorcycles stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School, Esiele; and L.A. Primary School, Ahoro-Esiele, between 8:00-9:00 a.m. and abducted pupils, students, and teachers before fleeing into nearby forests.

Authorities say 46 individuals were taken: 39 students/pupils and 7 teachers, including Mrs. Rachael Alamu, principal of Community High School, Esiele. Two teachers have been killed since the abduction, including one whose killing was shown in a distress video released by the captors. Another video released days later showed victims, including children as young as 2 and 3 years old, appealing for rescue while reportedly exposed to rain and harsh bush conditions.

UK Bans Hasan Piker from Entry, Citing Antisemitism Concerns Over Israel Remarks

London, June 1, 2026 — The UK Home Office has banned left-wing streamer and political commentator Hasan Piker from entering Britain, cancelling his Electronic Travel Authorisation, ETA, on grounds his presence “may not be conducive to the public good”.

Piker, 34, announced Sunday on X that “The UK has revoked my visa as well,” saying the decision was linked to his criticism of Israel. He was scheduled to speak at the SXSW London conference on Thursday, where his uncle Cenk Uygur, co-founder of The Young Turks, was also due to appear.

Uygur said he was stopped while boarding a flight to London and told he was deemed “a serious risk to the public order” because of remarks about Israel’s political influence in the US. The Home Office confirmed both men had their ETA cancelled under the same “public good” provision, which allows refusal if an individual is assessed as a potential risk to UK society. Individuals can still apply for a full visa for a more detailed assessment.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood blocked both Piker and Uygur over fears they could fuel antisemitism. For Piker, the decision referenced past comments including saying he would “vote for Hamas over Israel,” describing Orthodox Jews as “inbreds,” and claiming that “America deserved 9/11” as “backlash” for US foreign policy.

British Jewish organisations including the Jewish Leadership Council and Community Security Trust had urged the government to block Piker’s entry, arguing his rhetoric on Hamas, Hezbollah, Zionism and Orthodox Jews was not “conducive to the public good”. Labour MP David Taylor also called on the Home Office to revoke Piker’s visa ahead of SXSW London.

Sudan Army Downs Heavily Armed RSF Drone Carrying Missiles Over White Nile State

Kenana, White Nile State, May 30, 2026 — The Sudanese Armed Forces, SAF, said Saturday they shot down a long-range Rapid Support Forces, RSF, drone over White Nile State after a series of aerial attacks damaged vital infrastructure in the region.

Army spokesman said air defences “successfully intercepted a strategic enemy drone over the city of Kenana in White Nile state on Friday evening,” following careful tracking of the aircraft’s flight path.

White Nile Governor Qamar al-Din Mohamed Fadlallah said the drone was downed in the Al-Hudaib area and was carrying approximately eight missiles. He praised the armed forces for “high readiness of air defence systems in countering any possible aggression” and assured citizens the state’s airspace is protected.

The interception came hours after the RSF conducted multiple drone strikes on towns in White Nile State. The attacks targeted Rabak, Kosti, and Kenana, causing extensive damage to vital facilities. Damaged sites include a hospital in Al-Jabalain city, Kenana’s sugar factory and airport, and fuel and medicine warehouses in Kosti and Rabak, resulting in significant material losses and disruption to essential services.

Drone warfare between the army and RSF has intensified in recent months. The RSF has increasingly used long-range drones to strike army-controlled cities in central and southern Sudan, including fuel depots in Kosti and the naval base at Port Sudan. Sudan’s authorities have accused Ethiopia of providing launchpads for RSF drones with Emirati support — allegations neither country has formally addressed.

The army has reported similar interceptions elsewhere. In January, the 19th Infantry Division said it shot down RSF su***de drones targeting the Merowe Dam, an air base, and military headquarters in Northern State. All drones were destroyed before reaching their targets.

IDF Announces Death of 21-Year-Old Sergeant Michael Tyukin Killed by Hezbollah Drone in Southern Lebanon

Tel Aviv, May 31, 2026 — The Israel Defense Forces announced Sunday the death of Staff Sergeant Michael Tyukin, 21, who was killed Saturday night by a Hezbollah drone strike in southern Lebanon. Four additional soldiers were lightly wounded in the same incident.

According to the IDF, Tyukin was killed at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when a Hezbollah-operated first-person-view, FPV, drone struck an Israeli military position where Givati Brigade soldiers were conducting operations in southern Lebanon. The precision strike killed Tyukin and lightly wounded four other soldiers, who were evacuated for medical treatment.

The IDF identified Tyukin as a fighter in the Givati Brigade’s elite Reconnaissance Battalion, Unit 846. He was promoted from sergeant to staff sergeant posthumously “as a sign of appreciation for his service and bravery”.

Tyukin, a resident of Ashkelon, immigrated to Israel from Ukraine in 2020 with his mother and was her only child. He was not obligated to serve in a combat unit as an only son of a single parent, but chose to enlist in the Givati Reconnaissance Unit.

Defense Minister Israel Katz said Tyukin “immigrated to Israel from Ukraine with his mother only six years ago. He chose to tie his fate to the fate of the State of Israel, he enlisted in significant combat service and became a symbol of Zionism, devotion, and love of the land”.

Ashkelon Mayor Tomer Galam said: “The entire city of Ashkelon is in pain and mourning his death. Michael was his mother’s only son. The Ashkelon Municipality will accompany his mother through this difficult time and provide her with all the assistance she needs”.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extended condolences to Tyukin’s mother “on behalf of myself, my wife Sarah, and on behalf of all citizens of Israel,” adding: “Together with his comrades, he fought heroically, deep within Lebanese territory, to protect the security of Israel and the communities of the North. May Michael’s memory be blessed and enshrined in our hearts forever”.

IRGC Claims Retaliatory Strike on US Base in Kuwait After US Hits Telecom Tower on Iran’s Sirik Island

Tehran/Washington, June 1, 2026 — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC, said early Monday it struck a US air base in Kuwait in retaliation for a US attack on a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island in southern Iran. The exchange marks the latest tit-for-tat strikes amid a fragile ceasefire and ongoing US-Iran negotiations.

According to the IRGC, US forces targeted a communications tower on Sirik Island in Hormozgan Province earlier Monday. Sirik Island lies near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf.

US Central Command described weekend strikes as “self-defence strikes” on Iranian radar and drone control sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, carried out in response to “aggressive Iranian actions that included the shootdown of a US MQ-1 drone operating over international waters”. The IRGC statement specifically linked the Sirik Island telecom tower attack to the US operation.

In a statement carried by Iran’s Mehr News Agency and IRNA, the IRGC Aerospace Force said it “targeted and destroyed” the air base from which the Sirik Island aggression was launched.

The IRGC claimed “all predetermined targets were successfully hit” at the US base. Iranian media identified the base as Ali Al-Salam Air Base in Kuwait. The strike was reportedly carried out “approximately one hour” after the US attack on Sirik Island.

Kuwait’s military confirmed its air defences opened fire early Monday morning to intercept incoming drone and missile fire. The Kuwaiti Army General Staff said defence systems were “countering enemy missile and drone attacks,” with possible explosion sounds from interceptions.

Netanyahu, Defense Minister Katz Order IDF Strikes on Beirut’s Dahiyeh District Amid Ceasefire Strain

Jerusalem, June 1, 2026 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz on Monday ordered the Israel Defense Forces, IDF, to attack targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs, the Dahiyeh district, citing repeated ceasefire violations by Hezbollah.

In a joint statement from Netanyahu’s office, the two leaders said: “Following repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon by the terrorist group Hezbollah and the attacks against our cities and citizens, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered the IDF to attack terrorist targets in the Dahiyeh district in Beirut”.

Netanyahu’s office said the IDF was instructed to strike what Israel describes as “terrorist targets” in the area. Dahiyeh is a densely populated southern suburb of Beirut and a known Hezbollah stronghold.

The strike order comes despite a U.S.-mediated ceasefire in Lebanon that took effect on April 17 and was later extended through early July. Israeli troops and Hezbollah have continued to trade fire since the mid-April truce, with Hezbollah using “cheap, easy-to-assemble kamikaze drones” that have killed several Israeli troops in southern Lebanon.

Netanyahu said “Dahiyeh will not serve as a safe haven for the terrorist organization Hezbollah” and placed “direct responsibility” on the Lebanese government to prevent threats. 9e93

The move was “likely approved by the US,” according to initial reports. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei linked Israeli actions in Lebanon to U.S. positions, saying Tehran views Israeli actions in the region, including in Lebanon, as “inseparable from those of the U.S.”. Washington has not issued an official statement confirming approval at the time of reporting.
