Mr. David Sergeant, professionally known by his popular stage name Utang Akwa Ibom, is a distinguished Nigerian entertainer, master of ceremonies (compere), community leader, youth mentor, and politician from Afaha Offot in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
He currently serves as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on the Entertainment Industry, a position he has successfully occupied across successive administrations, including the administration of former Governor Udom Emmanuel and the current administration of Governor Pastor Umo Eno.
Early Life and Rise to Fame:
Born into a humble background, David Sergeant discovered his passion and talent for comedy and entertainment at an early age. As a young boy growing up in Uyo, he entertained people around his neighbourhood with his natural comic ability and lively personality.
His grassroots popularity earned him the nickname “The Councillor,” which later evolved into the identity by which he became widely known — Utang Akwa Ibom .
Through determination, consistency, and an exceptional ability to connect with people, he transitioned from grassroots entertainment into becoming one of the notable pioneers of Akwa Ibom's commercial entertainment industry.

Utang Akwa Ibom built a successful career as a stand-up comedian and high-profile master of ceremonies, entertaining audiences at major social, political, corporate, and community events.
His ability to combine humour, public speaking, crowd engagement, and event coordination has made him a recognisable personality within Akwa Ibom's entertainment and social scene.
Beyond performing, he has continued to advocate for the growth and professionalisation of the state's creative industry, particularly by creating platforms where emerging entertainers can showcase their talents.

As part of his commitment to professional and personal development, he successfully completed and defended his Master’s Degree in Public Administration (MPA). His successful internal defence marked another significant milestone in his academic journey and further strengthened his knowledge and understanding of public administration, governance, leadership, and public service.

Public Service and Government Role:
As Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Entertainment Industry, David Sergeant serves as an important link between the Akwa Ibom State Government and practitioners within the creative and entertainment sector.
His work focuses on strengthening collaboration between government and entertainers, promoting creative talents, creating opportunities for young people, and contributing to the development of Akwa Ibom's entertainment ecosystem.
Under the administration of Governor Pastor Umo Eno, he has also been involved in initiatives supporting the entertainment and tourism components of the state's ARISE Agenda, with emphasis on using creativity, culture, entertainment, and tourism as tools for economic development and youth empowerment. He is also the CEO of Dueua Hotel & Suite where he has employed over fifty workers
Ibom Entertainers Forum:
Utang Akwa Ibom is also associated with the leadership of the Ibom Entertainers Forum (IEF), an umbrella platform that brings together entertainment practitioners across Akwa Ibom State.
One of the notable initiatives under his leadership has been the effort to create a comprehensive database of entertainers across the state's 31 Local Government Areas. The initiative is aimed at identifying practitioners, improving coordination within the industry, and creating a stronger platform for government and private-sector engagement with creative professionals.
Ibom Entertainment Week:
David Sergeant has played a significant role in organising and promoting Ibom Entertainment Week, an initiative designed to celebrate Akwa Ibom's entertainment industry while providing opportunities for learning, networking, talent development, and industry engagement.
The programme features activities such as music and filmmaking masterclasses, giving emerging creatives access to knowledge and professional development opportunities.
Youth Empowerment and Community Development:
Beyond entertainment and government service, Utang Akwa Ibom has maintained a strong connection with grassroots communities, particularly through youth-focused initiatives.
One of his notable initiatives is the Utang Akwa Ibom Unity Cup, an annual grassroots football tournament established to promote peace, unity, community participation, and youth development.

Current award, In June 2026, David Sergeant, popularly known as Utang Akwa Ibom, was honoured by The African Church, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Uyo, with the prestigious Integrity Stewardship Award for Service to Humanity & Leadership. The recognition highlights his contributions to leadership, community service, entertainment, and humanitarian development. He has received more than 150 awards since he began politics.
Family
Mr. David Sergeant is married to Mrs. Uduak David Sergeant, and the couple is blessed with a Son and two daughters.
