Among the Efik, Ibibio, and Oron peoples, Nnabo was and still is a system of power that shaped law, warfare, and spirituality for centuries.

Nsibidi Nnabo enforced the law under the Obong (king). The mask was judge. The mask was verdict.

Today aa they are no longer warriors. But Nnabo still appears at coronations, burials, festivals. Reminding us of our collective heritage.

What started as plain European pans shipped into the Cross River became shimmering canvases of culture. With every hammer strike and punch mark, Efik artisans turned cold metal into warm memory: mermaids for the water spirits 🌊🧜🏽‍♀️, umbrellas for prestige 👑, and floral motifs for myths & clans 🌿.

And here’s the plot twist 👉 it wasn’t just men at the forge. Efik women were central to this art, engraving, trading, and turning everyday objects into heirlooms.

These trays and basins weren’t only for washing hands. They sat in shrines, dazzled guests, and flexed wealth before Instagram was even an idea. 🥂

Today, many live in museums across the world, British Museum, Pitt Rivers, private collections….but their shine hasn’t dimmed. A new wave of artists is reviving the craft, proving that brass never rusts, it remembers. ✨
