It was a hot afternoon, and my yellow Napep was waiting by the dusty roadside. I adjusted my glasses and looked at the two young passengers standing next to me.

“Where to?” I asked.

“Sabon Gari,” the young man replied, while the lady beside him nodded and held some cash.

I told them my price.

They looked at each other, a little hesitant. I could see they thought it was a bit high. The young man tried to negotiate, saying the distance wasn’t too far, and the lady added softly, “We are regular customers.”

I smiled. Fuel was expensive, and the road ahead wasn’t easy, but I also knew their situation. After thinking for a moment, I decided to reduce the price a little.

They smiled back, and just like that, we had a deal.

They stepped into my Napep, and I started the engine. As we drove off, I felt that little everyday joy — a simple ride, a small negotiation, and a connection made over the price of a trip.
