How might we collaborate to enable fast charging models for EV bikes in East Africa?
Proportion Global and ROAM Electric held a creative workshop with e-mobility stakeholders to shape the future of electric two-wheelers in East Africa to come up with ideas on how to enable fast charging models for EV bikes in East Africa.
Proportion Global first presented the findings from the qualitative research among 50+ bike riders and 13 potential charging operators. Then, through guided steps, we facilitated lively discussions and creative sessions, engaging ROAM Electric, OEMs, financiers, MSMEs, and ecosystem players to dive deeper into Charging-as-a-Service (CaaS) and how to deal with the trade-offs between battery-swapping models and the deployment of fast-charging infrastructure for electric motorcycles. The participants identified key friction points, aligned incentives, and designed solutions that optimise usability, adoption, and operational efficiency. In this context, fast charging, when implemented with appropriate technical and commercial guardrails, has emerged as a high-impact, rider-centric alternative.
What stood out most was the shared understanding that no single actor can solve this on their own. If done right, fast charging is not just an infrastructure upgrade. It is a lever for income stability, operational resilience, and commercial sustainability in Africa’s electric two-wheeler transition.
