Tapping into the creative mind -- Design the box.
Creativity is not just for the artists. But business people sometimes need an extra push, so why not make it a game?
You see, games are worlds which evolve in stages. You can imagine, create, open, explore and close the world. And is about creating these worlds specifically to explore and question challenges to improve collaboration, generate new insights and see what type of possibilities we can find.
When a presents itself, we rarely find the EXACT solution we’re looking for. Games that explore can help you make and break patterns. In this case, the point of the ‘Design the box’ is for teams to make decisions about important features and other aspects of their vision that are more difficult to articulate. They ultimately create the box to sell their idea to other teams.
Here’s how it goes:
🗣 Choose the topic for the design.
Give the just enough information about what could be in the box. Think along the lines of names of the idea, possible customers or end users, features, functions, etc.
🎨 It’s time to create!
Give the teams about 30mins to create their box. They should imagine seeing the box on a shelf somewhere and ready for sale. In creating the box, they can think about
What’s it called?
Who’s it for?
What’s its slogan?
What are its benefits?
🧾 Sell. Sell. Sell.
Now, each team has to their box to the group. As a facilitator, look for any breakthroughs as they present. Often, people translate features into benefits when selling.
If you want to go a step further and need an agreement on what’s next, write down the differences and similarities of each box, and continue building the session on that.
