Last weekend I interviewed Mwazulu who fearlessly walked into museums and walked out with artifacts that should not be in display in museums. Local newspapers ran headlines that said “Activists steal a sculpture from Africa Museum,” but Mwazulu disagreed with that notion. “This is not any sculpture; it is part of our history and of the inheritance our forefathers left us. This was not supposed to be on display here. We are not thieves who came to steal something. You don’t ask permission to take back what was taken from you, now do you?”

Ik had nee willen zeggen toen Aminata Cairo me voordroeg voor deze gig, maar ze zei: “you got this! You’re a black man, you’re a professional journalist, you live and write about this subject daily, so you’ve got a perspective that your audience does not have.” Ze had gelijk. AMSTERDAM -- When budding EuroParliamentarian Samira Rafaela talks about the people of the residents of the Dutch Caribbean islands, she consistently uses inclusive terms like “us” and “we”. The daughter of a Curacaolanean mother and an Islamic Ghanaian/Nigerian father, she was raised with a Moroccan stepfather, but she feels “Deeply connected” to the islands. “I have been to Curacao many times and I have very fond memories from each visit. Note that I carry a Curacaolanean last name; that should tell how much of Curacao is in me,” she said on Tuesday.
