Meet the makers! 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗨𝗽𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗱 is the first collection of Robina Wouters and Unge George Wilbers. See it on the catwalk on 12 October in Amsterdam. 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀.

The grand finale! Join FunFair Fashion on Saturday 12 October for Project Upcycled. All the clothes in this 𝗳𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘄 are 𝘂𝗽𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 that Unge George Wilbers collected around Amsterdam (oh the stories!). Their mother, designer Robina Wouters, designed new garments and together they created and sewed a collection.

Sound unconventional? 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 also don't completely fit the standards the European and North American fashion industries have conditioned us to expect: tall, thin, white, non-disabled.

𝗗𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿? Why is that important? How do you do that?

This climate march will take place at Amsterdam Zuidas, where lots of #4's (& their funders) are located. Here are the goals of the Climate Crisis Coalition (members: Oxfam Novib, FNV, Fridays for Future, Greenpeace, Extinction Rebellion NL, Fossil Free NL, Milieudefensie, and DeGoedeZaak):

1. Set the goal for 2030 at 1.5 degrees
2. Quit fossil
3. Invest in job security and retraining workers
4. Let big polluters carry the heaviest burden, not citizens
5. Amplify and support affected communities, including climate refugees
6. Scale up sustainable energy
7. Reduce livestock and guarantee fair prices farmers
8. Tackle the climate crisis jointly with the ecological crisis

#2-5 speak directly to the fashion system I work in:

🛢️ 2. Quitting fossil means curbing synthetic fabric production. New polyester (plastic) clothing uses at least 70 million barrels of oil each year.

↘️ 3. Degrowth in the fashion industry means retraining garment workers. Governments have to mandate this. 100B items of clothing are made each year, most by human hands. This mass scale over-production currently employs 70M people, 80% of whom are women of color in the global south.

🏭 4. The big polluters like to put the responsibility on consumers (e.g. bring your old sweater back & we'll give you a credit on your new purchase). Fashion brands have long avoided responsibility for the colonialist systems they perpetuate, i.e. producing goods in the lowest wage countries where weak governments will not punish brands for exploiting workers and the environment.

💲5. Governments should fine clothing brands and the money should be paid out as reparations to (among others) the families who have become climate refugees due to brands destroying and polluting natural resources.
