‘A driving artwork of 30 Minis’
EINDHOVEN/HAPERT - Thirty Minis with a very special appearance will hit the road on Friday (September 1). They feature a work of art by the Eindhoven graphic artist Donald van Schilt, who also added augmented reality. The result: a moving and living painting.
Donald van Schilt is originally a graphic designer, but inspired by his father, he also started making art in 2010. “Very different from my father, by the way, because he painted and he actually found the process more interesting than the end result. My first artwork was a digital collage that I also posted on Facebook. I received a lot of response to that and the clients of my own agency also showed interest. So I continued, developed my own style and was eventually able to combine that artstyle with assignments. For the Thermenmuseum in Heerlen, for example, but also for social work company Ergon in this region.
Ten years later, Van Schilt came across someone who had added augmented reality to his work and he was immediately sold. “Fascinating how, by layering and positioning your work, you can bring art to life and just walk through it. And it is not only fun, but can actually add something.”
He has now done this for Santino, supplier of workwear in Hapert, part of the Vespo group in Eindhoven. Because the company has existed for thirty years, it wanted to have a work of art that would express that milestone. But also that it is an Eindhoven company and part of a larger whole, their products (company clothing, ed.), the founders of the textile company and the attention to green business.
Van Schilt: ,,Santino wanted an art car, as was apparent from their contact with Holland Art Group, who had put me forward for the assignment. Thirty Minis in total for which their customers can 'save' and then drive one of those cars for three years. I have been working on that since the turn of the year.”
The result is an 'urban raw' car where augmented reality has also been applied. All Minis are also numbered, just like other works of art that have been produced in series.
