When George Floyd died and the world was bursting with pain for all the people who died unjustly. because of politics, because of racism, because of hatred, because of history. Then I deeply felt my privilege to live as a white woman in the Netherlands. Safe, protected and prosperous. Not for the first time, but harder for some reason. It gave me the urge to immerse myself in order not to be in the ignorant anymore but to start with really listening and being present. So this reflected on me as an artist and I wanted that too. I wanted to make something that would amplify the people that suffer from these systems.
Then I heard the stories of parents having 'the talk' with their child. The talk is about that they are of color and that this could be reason enough to get into dangerous situations. This was unthinkable to me. So call me naive but this was diametrically opposed to everything that gave me hope. My parents never had to tell this to me and my brothers because white skin color never was a reason for danger in our society. In our society, in the Netherlands. Because with this realisation I saw the damage we do with Black Pete. To so many young children this tradition tells them they are less important and puts parents in the position to have the talk with their children.
The profits from these shirts and sweaters go to the Black Archives. So that they can provide our children with a complete and inclusive history.
