Too busy to play

What if you could invent a game in five minutes using only a handful of cards as your guide?

As part of our Games Kitchen at AB4, we, Jana Romanova and Renate Boere, are hosting a small playtest of a new game that helps you create games.

Draw four cards, each from a different category, and use them as ingredients for a brand-new game. In five minutes, you’ll have invented something unexpected.

Too Busy to Play is made for people who always say they don’t have time to play games. And we want to prove them wrong.

It’s an experiment, it’ll be a little chaotic, and we’d love your honest reaction.

This Sunday, we officially reopened AB4!

We were honored to welcome .landre.official , Artistic Director of , who marked the occasion with thoughtful words about the importance of broedplaatsen and the artists who bring them to life.

Together, we raised our glasses and celebrated a new chapter for our broedplaats.

During our reopening, visitors had the opportunity to step inside the studios of AB4 artists and explore artworks displayed throughout the building.

Artists shared insights into their practices, opened up their workspaces, and offered a glimpse into everyday life inside the broedplaats. As visitors wandered through the building, conversations unfolded around creativity, collaboration, and the things that connect us through art.

Our reopening wasn’t just about opening studio doors; it was also packed with activities organized by AB4 residents.

Studio Renate Boere hosted their game ‘Beyond Design’ and invited participants into a collaborative game focused on imagining and organizing socially relevant design projects.

Visitors could also join an exclusive building tour, where Renate shared the story of AB4’s origins and guided guests through its recent renovations.

Thank you to everyone who came by, explored the studios, and spent the day with us. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

For the grand re-opening of AB4, we created a complete new visual identity for this artist-run creative hub in The Hague. From the logo design to social posts and reels, the identity was developed to reflect the atmosphere, openness and collaborative spirit that defines the space.

AB4, located on Abraham van Beyerenstraat 4, is home to a diverse community of artists, designers and makers from all over the world. What started in a former school building has evolved into a vibrant place for experimentation, exchange and collective growth.

The concept for the logo grew directly from the building itself. Its architectural lines, windows and unexpected angles became the foundation of the typographic form. Within the logo, you can recognise the letters A and B, together with the number 4, which follows the outline of the building. At the same time, the composition forms a ladder — symbolising growth, movement and the idea of building something together.

For the Instagram identity, we wanted to make the community visible. Each artist and designer received their own introduction post, creating a feed that reflects the diversity of voices, disciplines and personalities within AB4.
The identity remains playful, open and always in motion — just like the place itself.

SAVE THE DATES: 07.05, 14.05 & 21.05.26, vanaf 21u | De Aanschouw - Café Hensepeter, Nieuwe Binnenweg 184-a, Rotterdam

We would like to highlight the design of ‘Atlas Of Textscapes’, released in June 2025. The publication has recently been included in the Special Collections of the KB National Library of the Netherlands. Perfect timing to reflect on the design process and collaboration behind it.

‘Atlas Of Textscapes’ is conceived as a spatial and systematic framework for the work of Tanja Smit, in which reading, looking, and interpretation converge. Her text drawings transform written language into image and show strong affinities with cartography and landscape. From this parallel, the atlas became a natural design choice: a book form that suggests order while simultaneously inviting wandering and rereading.

The book presents 275 textscapes, organized into fifteen thematic subchapters named after landscapes they formally or conceptually resemble. This clear structure offers orientation, while variations in rhythm and image continually challenge fixed reading habits. In the back of the book, Smit’s working methods are made explicit through a set of rules for each work, reinforcing the book’s didactic dimension. The publication functions not only as documentation, but also as a tool for understanding methodical and experimental practice. Several textscapes are further translated into musical compositions, expanding the field of play across disciplines.

The bright blue cover subtly refers to the ballpoint pen blue central to Smit’s daily practice, anchoring the book materially in its making. Working closely together throughout the design process was a genuine pleasure and essential in shaping the publication as a coherent whole, positioning the book as both a navigable landscape and a source of inspiration for artists and designers alike.

MEET THE NEW INTERNS |

&

This week, Studio Renate Boere introduces two new interns! Over the coming period, they’ll support the studio on various projects, learn from the creative process and gain hands-on experience in the world of design. After their first week, they’ve already learned a lot and are excited to be part of the team and dive into everything that happens behind the scenes.

Odile Vuerstaek | Hello, my name is Odile Vuerstaek. I am 22 years old and recently graduated in June 2025 with a degree in Graphic Design and Fine Arts from LUCA School of Arts Ghent. Alongside my studies, I consider myself a multidisciplinary artist. My work is eclectic and dynamic: while my recent projects mainly consist of prints, books, and posters, over the years I have also created carpets, paintings, and drawings, and I occasionally produce my own music. I am very much looking forward to gaining experience as an intern in a graphic design studio like this one and to further developing my creative perspective within a professional environment.

Jet van Eekelen | Hi! My name is Jet van Eekelen. I am also 22 and currently in my third year of studying Graphic Design at Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. I’m a designer with a growing fascination for print. books, magazines, zines, and the entire process behind them. I enjoy experimenting with new techniques, materials, and ways of working, and I’m especially interested in how ideas translate into tangible outcomes. Alongside print, my interests extend to posters, corporate identity, and animation, where I turn concepts into clear visual stories. I design with curiosity, care, and a strong eye for detail, and I’m excited to further develop these skills while contributing to the studio.

This post is a twenty-year throwback to the moment when Studio Renate Boere designed the book Still Growing in collaboration with artist Zeger Reyers. We were reminded of this project when the book resurfaced in ‘s bookshop on the occasion of the opening of Positions: Unearthing, opening tomorrow, February 6.

Positions: Unearthing brings forgotten and suppressed stories back to the surface and explores how memory, vulnerability, and new perspectives can generate new forms of connection. The exhibition features works by local artists Roger Anis, Marie Civikov, Priyageetha Dia, and Ben Yau, and positions art as an active part of society. It creates a space where long-term trajectories, urgent questions, and relationships between art and the city can unfold.

Still Growing similarly addresses urgent questions about how people shape their own environments, and how these processes can, in turn, render them vulnerable.

From the outset, the book’s tactility played a crucial role. The publication consists of five different paper types, which refer to the transience of Reyers’ work. Both the format and the cover reference a magazine, whose fragile materiality underscores the temporal nature of the work. Zeger’s works call for a grand gesture, yet his materials and working methods stand in contrast to this: they are often processes that arise naturally and continue to evolve slowly over time. The decision to place the title almost screaming on the cover paradoxically asks for silence. The fragment Zeger chooses to capture in his work, is expressed through the ‘hole’ in the cover. Zeger’s ‘eye’ invites the reader into his world of experience.

Many thanks to for bringing Still Growing back into the light after all these years, and for continuing to create space for reflection, memory, and rediscovery.

We are excited to announce the first edition of Zefir7 in 2026, centered on the theme of role play as an art and design practice, by Jana Romanova.

Jana Romanova is a multidisciplinary artist working with games, performance, and photography. Through games, live-action role-playing (LARP), and other designed participatory scenarios, she researches liminal spaces, invisible social systems, and questions of agency and care, using play as a method for testing alternative ways of living together.

In the next edition of zefir7, she will present a two-part lecture. The first part introduces role play as a participatory artistic and research method. Focusing on live-action role-playing, it looks at embodied, improvised scenarios in which participants inhabit roles and collectively generate narratives within carefully designed situations.

The lecture outlines historical contexts and discusses contemporary art projects that use role play, designed situations, and collective storytelling to explore forms of experience that emerge through collective play.

The second part moves into Jana’s own practice. She will share a few recent projects and invite the audience to try out tiny moments of play together.
