Mercadero

Mercadero Mercadero is the international marketing and consulting company founded and managed by Freek Jan Koekoek.

We develop realistic marketing and business management solutions with our customers, who are often Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) addressing European markets. These exporters, manufacturers and primary producers are based in emerging markets all over the world. We also work with Business Support Organizations (BSOs) supporting these companies. Our approach is rooted in values of sustainabilit

y, fair business practices and international solidarity. We frequently work in public-private partnerships, where a business approach is combined with wider objectives such as poverty alleviation and environmental protection. But first and foremost, we maintain a high professional standard.

The international quinoa event organised by Cabolqui has come to an end and I (we) feel totally inspired and motivated to further develop the quinoa sector in Bolivia. The organisers did a great job mobilising almost 200 people from around the world to gain an indebth understanding of the Bolivian quinoa sector. Bolivia's Royal Quinoa is the leading quinoa variety on international markets. It is produced organically on the altiplano and is part of a sensitive eco-social system. At these altitudes, quinoa is virtually the only crop that can be grown. The productino is part of the llama-quinoa system, where natural areas and fallow land are needed in a delicate balance with arable land. The use of natural zones and 'barreras vivas' help maintain this balance. The PROINPA institute in Cochabamba gave us an impressive overview of their research that aims to strengthen this system (partly in collaboration with the University of Wageningen WUR). They have developed a wide variety of biological inputs and techniques to improve production. These include natural control of pests, use of microorganisms to make nutrients available and the development of different varieties for various uses and situations. All of this in compliance with organic standards. Other interesting developments are the initiative undertaken by FAO to create an International Centre for Quinoa and the creation of an international traders network. Personally, I was very happy to meet some farmers and their representatives, who gave me another perspective on the recent growth in sales and prices. Whereas the income to farmers has undoubtedly increased significantly over the past five years especially, there is still a long way to go to end poverty among the inhabitants of the altiplano. And farmers are also faced with increasing costs and requirements to keep their production system healthy and sustainable. Well, many of the original inhabitants have actually migrated, but there is hope (and a need) that some of them will now return.

All in all, the conference showed us a strong an vibrant quinoa sector, that is eager to engage in the many challenges that lie ahead.

On a more materialistic note, the quinoa crop is expected to be 80000 tonne this year, a strong increase from 50000 tonne in 2012. This will certainly lead to a complicated trading dynamic, especially because the processing capacity is limited. Most participants actually would like to have stable prices, but there is no mechanism in place to achieve this. We will see what happens when the harvest starts in April.

Press release
Bolivia and CBI Salute UN International Year of the Quinoa
14 exporters of natural ingredients highlight quinoa at Biofach 2013 of which 4 currently supported
by CBI

Quinoa, the royal grain of the Andes, will be celebrated around the world in 2013. CBI will team up
with Cabolqui to bring 13 exporters of natural ingredients to Biofach 2013, 13 - 16 February in
Nürnberg, Germany. These companies export a variety of special ingredients and finished products
including quinoa, aloe vera
gel and juice, maca root and cocoa liquor -- but in 2013, the focus is on quinoa.

Initially pioneered in the healthfood market, quinoa -- with its slightly nutty flavour -- has
become a favourite of high-profile chefs. Gluten-free and nutritious, it is the only vegetable that
contains all 24 essential amino acids. Across Europe, quinoa is showing up on menus in taboulleh,
soups, salads and other creative dishes.

This 'quinoa revolution' has led to increased export earnings and significantly better incomes for
indigenous people farming in some of the poorest areas of the Andes. Quinoa has been transformed
from a traditional crop for local use to a major cash crop. Both acreage and prices have increased
substantially over the years. Most of the exported quinoa is certified organic and some is also
Fair Trade. This social and economic success prompted the UN declaration of the International Year
of the Quinoa, IYQ.

Seven of the exporters presented at the Bolivian Pavilion (Hall 4A, Stand 149) are renowned organic
quinoa producers. Four of the companies at the Bolivian Pavilion are currently participating in
CBI's intensive Export coaching Programme for Natural Ingredients. They have been carefully audited
in terms of quality, consistency and reliability. The companies have invested heavily to prepare
for success in Europe, adapting their organisations and products to the European market
requirements, thus reducing the risk for European buyers. All 14 companies are interested in
forming long-term partnerships.

Over the past 40 years, thousands of exporters have found their way to Europe through CBI’s (Centre
for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries) extensive programmes in export management,
quality, reliability and the requirements necessary to succeed in the European market place.
Cabolqui (Bolivian Chamber of Royal Quinoa and Organic Products Exporters) is a group of ten
leading quinoa companies in the export and the elaboration of finished products. At present, they
represent 85% of the nation’s quinoa grain export.
