In the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, the iconic “Congratulations!” scene at the end of the TV series (episode 26) was partially inspired by a real-life tradition from Gainax staff meetings. In the anime One Piece, creator Eiichiro Oda originally planned for the series to last only 5 years.
He started serialization in 1997 with the intention of wrapping up the story quickly… but the world-building, characters, and fan love kept expanding it.
As of 2025, it’s still ongoing after 28 years, making it one of the longest-running manga/anime series ever — and Oda has joked that he now regrets promising his editors it would be short!
