Changing URLs for pages in โ€œCrawled โ€“ currently not indexedโ€ or โ€œDiscovered โ€“ currently not indexedโ€ is one of the greatest SEO mistakes you might never recover from.
The September 2022 helpful content update didnโ€™t just shake rankings, it exposed habits many SEOs were relying on. One of them is Refreshing content by simply changing URLs.
At some point, that trick worked. I used it too. A new URL looked like a new page. Google gave it a second look. But that era is gone.
Today, when a page shows as โ€œCrawled โ€“ currently not indexed,โ€ Google has already seen the page, evaluated it, and made a decision not to include it in search results
And when it says โ€œDiscovered โ€“ currently not indexed,โ€ Google is saying โ€œI know this page exists, but Iโ€™m not even convinced itโ€™s worth crawling yet.โ€
Thatโ€™s not a technical issue. Thatโ€™s a value signal.
Hereโ€™s where most people get it wrong
They panic. Then they do what feels โ€œsmartโ€:
- Change the URL
- Resubmit
- Hope Google sees it as new
But Google isnโ€™t new to this game.
Changing the URL doesnโ€™t reset the quality of the page. It just resets your signals.
You lose:
- Accumulated crawl history
- Internal link equity
- Any trust that page was starting to build
And the worst case is, you create duplicate or competing versions of the same weak contentโ€ฆ which makes things even worse.
