The journalist asked, “Did you climb Mount Everest four times in 15 days? Did you run?”
Twenty-nine-year-old Sherpa climber Tashi Gyaljen Sherpa responded with a smile, “It’s not possible to run! But sacrifice and courage are required!”
Yesterday, 27 May 2025 in the crowd gathered to welcome him, his 4-year-old son Thubten Kunga Sherpa ran out to greet his father, who had climbed Mount Everest 4 times in 15 days without missing a beat. When his wife, who had been thinking of him for a long time, said, “Your papa has come,” and sent their son to welcome him, with Sheroa dress and beautiful bouquet of flowers, my breath caught. My eyes filled with tears of joy. Among the hundreds who came to welcome him, it was his youngest son who reached him first—because he ran. That father and son moment taught us all a simple truth: running isn’t the only way to be fast.
Since leaving Kathmandu and his family, he hadn’t slept more than four hours a night. He lost 11 kilograms of body weight, cried in the cold mountains thinking of his little son, wife, and family—and yet, he fulfilled his responsibility of guiding his friend Ikramul Hasan Shakil Bangladesh 🇧🇩 👏 to the summit. Congratulations to him for completing the mission he set out to achieve. Very thankful for the expedition operators who supported his mission.
Though he has gone many days without proper sleep no chance to see sweet dreams. He proved to the world that mission dreams can fulfilled with determination—even without rest and sleep. To the world’s youth who’ve lost hope, claiming that nothing is possible, he has shown what courage can do.
Another remarkable story has now been added to the village of Phortse, known as the village of Sherpa climbers. Thank you again, and congratulations, for making everyone proud of what you’ve achieved!
In our community of climbers, which overflows with stories like this, I’ve long believed these stories deserve to be shared in books and films. News articles and certificates are not enough. If the stories of Sherpa climbers were translated into books and movies, I believe many people around the world would gain the courage to say, “I can do it.”
