Situated on a rocky outcrop on Galway Bay, Dunguaire Castle may not be the biggest castle in the country but it has certainly seen its fair share of Irish History. Built in 1520 on the site of an even older ancient Gaelic castle, it was at the heart of the Irish literary revival in the early twentieth century. Past inhabitants and lodgers include Oliver St John Gogarty, WB Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Lady Gregory. Nowadays, visitors can pay to experience a medieval banquet in the castle hall 😀
This colourful piece captures the castle at high tide, perched on its promontory and surrounded by water on three sides.
