She did not know the question was coming.
Her answer was similar to many busy business people, but with a touch humour.

She does not want to do her hair and makeup every day just to tell people about her work. She wants to talk about the future of food and fibre, not worry about how she looks doing it. And she would rather her digital twin carry the nerves than she does.

I built her digital twin from one studio session. This is her, before it existed, telling me why she wanted one.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗘𝗢 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝘂𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆.

Ron Yekutiel, CEO of Kaltura (Nasdaq: KLTR), said it plainly: "There are more people I need to communicate with than hours in the day to communicate with them." So now his own digital twin delivers his updates, briefings and customer messages, in his voice, at a scale one person physically cannot.

He also said something worth repeating: a video message delivered by an avatar that looks and sounds like the real person creates a connection that text cannot replicate. That is the whole point. Not replacing the person, giving them a way to show up more.

That is the exact sentence I hear from my own clients, just in different words. They are experts in their field, or they are running a business, and there simply are not enough hours in the day. That is the reason I started building digital twins in the first place.

Even Meta is building one for Mark Zuckerberg, still in development, not live yet, but the direction is the same.

New Zealand is a little slow to catch on. The people already doing this are not small players.

𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗔𝗜 𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝟮 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀.

Overseas, business leaders have started using one to build their presence and share what they know.

LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman built an AI version of himself, trained on 20 years of his own talks, interviews and writing. It has stepped in for him at more than 50 events, answering audience questions live, in his voice. Every time, it is labelled as the AI version, not the real him.

Coaches and consultants are doing it too. One well known mindset coach launched his own digital twin to keep sharing his knowledge without needing to be everywhere in person.

New Zealand is more cautious. But the inquiries I am getting tell a different story. More business owners are starting to ask how this could work for them.

I Tested My AI Digital Twin's Voice (No Avatar Needed)

This isn't an AI avatar. It's my AI digital twin's voice, layered over footage of me testing lighting, backdrops and camera setups for clients.

If you've never used AI in your content, this is the easiest place to start: clone your own voice and use it over footage you already have.

I test setups like this every month so what I offer clients has been tested, not only researched.

You write the script. You know your subject. It's delivered in a cloned voice that's genuinely yours, no face on screen yet. It's a smaller first step, and a good way to learn how AI content works before going further.

Your face still matters, that's not changing. But faceless AI content is holding its own in the data. 30% of top performing videos have no face in them, and it converts 161% higher than polished video, at 60 to 80% lower cost.

Not ready to put your face on an AI video? Your voice alone is a real first step.

We got this from Corina on Google, and it has stuck with me since.

Corina deals with migraines, and being under bright lights to film regularly is not always possible for her. That is the real reason a lot of people quietly stop showing up on video, even when they have something worth saying.

Here is what she wrote:

𝗜 𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼-𝘁𝗼-𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗼 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁. 𝗡𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆.

The promise sounds great: upload a photo, get a talking video. Fast, cheap, no camera required.

But in practice the lip sync still does not look right. And when a video looks off, it reflects on your brand — not on the tool.

The technology is improving fast. I will keep testing. But right now there is only one approach I would trust for client-facing content: a well-filmed digital twin using HeyGen for video and ElevenLabs for voice.

That combination lets you produce videos that speak in your voice, switch between portrait and landscape, update the script, and change the background — without going back on camera.

If you are thinking about using video avatars for your business, I would hold off on the quick fixes for now.
