One of the things I enjoy most about being a volunteer Business Mentor with Business Mentors New Zealand is seeing business owners gain confidence and momentum.

Today I caught up with my mentee, Judith Scott of Loud and Proud - Business in Waika. Judith has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to networking and helping people make meaningful connections, but like many business owners, she was finding it challenging to market herself and turn that expertise into business growth.

Over the past few months we've spent time discussing ideas, testing opportunities, and implementing a couple of practical marketing initiatives. The exciting part? Judith has recently seen her turnover double. What a fantastic result!

It's a great reminder that sometimes we don't need all the answers ourselves. Sometimes we simply need a sounding board, a fresh perspective, and someone to challenge our thinking and help turn ideas into action.

I love what I get to do - although do wish I had longer arms for selfiesšŸ˜‚

Being involved in a few Boards and community organisations is something I take seriously. If I put my hand up, I'm all in.

Which is why, at about 8pm last night, I was suddenly struck by a mild sense of panic...

I'd promised to make 24 cupcakes for the Interlocknz Trust Community CafƩ today.

Oops. 😳

No worries. Crisis averted.

Out came the mixing bowl, on went the oven, and before long I was standing in my dressing gown decorating chocolate cupcakes like some sort of late-night baking contestant.

The upside? In the middle of winter, there's something quite lovely about the heat from the oven warming the kitchen, although the fogging of the glasses wasn't idealšŸ˜‚.

The result? Twenty-four chocolate cupcakes, decorated and delivered.

Now I'm hoping they've been thoroughly woofed down by the Community CafĆ© crowd and not judged too harshly on the fact they were created by a woman wearing slippers and a dressing gown well past her bedtime. šŸ˜‚

Community doesn't happen by accident. It's powered by volunteers, people who pitch in, and occasionally, last-minute cupcake baking sessions.

Happy Wednesday!

Last week finished exactly how more meetings should... with a walk around Lake Te Koo Utu with Anita Crowe from Construction Advantage Ltd.

No boardroom. No Zoom link. No staring at a screen wondering if you're on mute.

Just a good old-fashioned walk, a chat, plenty of fresh air, and the opportunity to solve all the world's problems (or at least have a good crack at it!).

One of the things I love about running a business is that not every conversation has to happen within four walls. Sometimes the best ideas come when you're out moving, surrounded by the beautiful environment we have right here in Cambridge.

And because all productive meetings deserve a reward, we wrapped things up with a cool beverage at Good Union.

Work, fresh air, great company, and a chance to put the world to rights. Not a bad way to end the week. šŸ»šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļøšŸŒ³

Bucket list item: officially ticked āœ”ļø

Karen finally made it to Hobbiton after a previous attempt ended less ā€œMiddle-earth adventureā€ and more ā€œhospital admissionā€ 😬

The weather wasn’t exactly giving ā€œsunny Shire postcard,ā€ but not even the rain could dampen the magic of wandering around those hobbit holes. The detail, the creativity, the sheer effort behind it all… absolutely incredible.

Honestly, even in the rain, the place is pure magic ✨
10/10 would survive another Waikato downpour for second breakfast.

Now what to put onto the Bucket List?

Winter prep at Kaz HQ ā„ļø

We have officially reached the stage of life where ā€œelectric lap blanketsā€ feel less like a luxury and more like a business necessity.

The best part? The cords are long enough to travel with us around the office… although we may need an extension cord for bathroom trips šŸ˜‚

Yes, the room is warm.
Yes, we still feel cold.
Yes, someone suggested stand-up desks with walking machines underneath… but let’s not get carried away. Maybe next year.

Kylie is stoked to see this one go live ✨
A huge project showcasing everything that makes Cambridge so special - where to stay, eat, shop, explore, invest, conference, connect and discover.

Often described as the jewel of the Waikato, Cambridge is where high-performance sport meets relaxed living, and vibrant culture sits alongside small-town charm. Centrally located in the North Island, it’s an easy and rewarding destination whether you’re visiting for a day or staying a while.

We love bringing projects like this to life - big or small. If you need support with your next project, chat to the Kaz team šŸ¤

Still buzzing after the Rocketspark event celebrating the launch of Creative Freedom — a field guide for running a graphic design business šŸ“˜āœØ

There’s something pretty special about being in a room full of designers from all around the motu (yep, I’m claiming that’s the right word šŸ˜„), many of whom have been part of the Rocketspark journey for years. You could feel it straight away — this isn’t just a platform, it’s a community.

Designers can be bold, opinionated, a little bossy even… but we all share one thing: we genuinely love this team.

Rocketspark have built their business around people. They show up with real support, real solutions, and real aroha. They’re there to help us grow our businesses, and in turn, help our clients thrive too. And honestly? Not many website companies operate like that.

Hearing their story was inspiring — but seeing how they’ve grown as a team was even better. It really does feel like a family (and I’m proud to say I feel part of it šŸ’›).

Massive thanks to the Rocketspark crew — the book is coming with me on holiday this week and I can’t wait to dive in cover to cover. I've also bought 3 other copies - for team members and two other great creatives!

Here’s to community, creativity, and doing business a little more human. šŸš€
