Pixl Creative

Pixl Creative I create cohesive & considered digital designs & content that attract and engage. I'm a British import and made Christchurch my home in 2008.

I first started working in the Internet space in 1994 and have nearly 30 years of experience in Marketing. I've loved being creative since childhood, and have developed a passion for digital design, especially helping small businesses improve their visual marketing and brand assets. When I'm not behind my MacBook, you'll find me out on my mountain bike, riding all over Canterbury and beyond, and helping other riders discover our fabulous trail network.

Did a thing yesterday. I finally entered my first MTB enduro race. I've put it off for years for various reasons but ran out of excuses - mostly because the GC Girls on Dirt Enduro is such an inclusive, supportive event, and I've watched from the sidelines for too long. Wasn't unhappy about grabbing 6th place in my category (Intermediate 50+) either!

Thanks so much to my support crew Kate Turner-Syme and Monz Turner-Syme who gave me so much encouragement beforehand (and a big ole nudge to enter), and were screaming for me during the race, giving me the last spurt of energy I needed when I ran out on the last hill, then took me out for a celebratory drink and gave me some well-needed post-race care, before heading out for Monz' Birthday dinner. Thanks for giving up your Birthday to support me and everyone else - you're the best cheering crew ever! Big thanks also to Ingrid Marcus for cheering me on from afar and dragging yourself out on cold evenings to help me train!

Julie Phillips - your encouragement and MC skills are legendary - I can always count on you to bring the fun and the banter - thanks for being awesome! Thanks to all the organisers, sponsors, volunteers, photographers and all the other riding queens for making it such an epic day - we all smashed it - woot!

Time to lie down for a bit... πŸ˜†

Another design tip for you. Whatever you're creating, remember: don't cram it all in! Giving your elements some space to breathe makes a world of difference. It keeps things clean, legible, and easy on the eyes. So, spread things out a bit and let your design shine! βœ¨πŸ–ŒοΈ

Have you ever wondered about the difference between RGB and CMYK colours and how they are used?

RGB: Digital devices display colours using different combinations of red, green, and blue light, hence RGB. Millions of colours are available. Anything designed for a screen should use RGB colour mode.

CMYK: Printing machines create images by combining cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK) in varying degrees with physical ink. There are 16 thousand colours available. Anything designed for print should use CMYK colour mode.

If you design for print using RGB, your colours could end up looking duller or 'muddy' when they are converted to CMYK by the printer.

This is a simple stop-motion video I created (at no charge) for a local women's mountain biking group to thank one of their sponsors.

It's not as perfect as I'd usually like as the group just wanted to get something out there quickly. There are some subtle differences between some of the shots due to wind/nature etc - but it demonstrates a valuable lesson for social media marketing: it doesn't always have to be 100% perfect. Sometimes getting it out there is the priority, and so many content creators publish raw, unpolished content that gets great results. Often, being real is more important.

So if you're holding back because you haven't perfected your content yet, maybe it's time to take a leap of faith and just get posting!

I love working from home as it offers me a peaceful environment to concentrate and be creative, plus I have all my creature comforts around me, including my fluffy support crew. Teddy, Harley, and Frankie are always around for a quick cuddle when I need to take a break, but of course, they are absolutely no help when I need another pair of hands! πŸ˜†

Who's in your crew? Shout out a team member you can't be without or share a pic!

When creating a design, whether it's for social media, your website, or other marketing materials, take care when selecting colours. Using too many different colours in a design can make it look messy, and not sticking to colours that compliment each other or have similar tones/shades can also make your design chaotic and even jarring to the eye. As with anything design-related, KISS works every time (Keep It Simple, Stupid) πŸ˜‰.

I usually use 1-3 key colours in a design, with a small pop of an accent colour if needed to highlight something important.

Tip: Use colours from your branding to keep your designs consistent and identifiable as yours.

I have worked with Julia from The Marketing Club since 2018, creating social media content for her 'done for you' clients and helping her members of The Success Circle create engaging and impactful social content for themselves. What Julia doesn't know about social media marketing would fit on a postage stamp, and she has helped hundreds of local business owners grow their businesses over the years.

Some of the marketing materials I've created for The Marketing Club include social templates, planners, infographics, eBooks, and workbooks. I'll have a crack at creating anything Julia needs and I love the variety of work!
