Ever wondered how polar fleece came to be?
In the late 1970s. at Malden Mills, Massachusetts, someone was fed up with wool—heavy, itchy, slow to dry, and requiring sheep that weren't exactly volunteering their coats. Their solution? Create something with all the warmth by spinning petroleum into polyester fibres. They called it "Polar Fleece," and it did everything wool did. Lightweight, quick-drying, and warm even when wet. Game-changer.
But here's the kicker: Malden Mills didn't patent their invention. They handed the recipe to everyone and said, "Go wild." This single act of generosity allowed the entire industry to innovate. Patagonia jumped on board in the 1980s with their legendary Synchilla Snap-T pullover, and the rest is history. From mountaineers to everyday wardrobes, fleece conquered the world.
