This was an eCommerce build - with a difference.

At Te Tahi Youth's online store, you’re not buying for yourself. You’re buying for rangatahi in need.

Socks
Hygiene packs
Counselling sessions, GP appointments, medical equipment for youth clinics

Every item in the store directly supports the work Te Tahi Youth is doing for young people across Ōtautahi.

Working with organisations like this is exactly why we started Bread Design.

We were tired of seeing amazing, community-focused groups priced out of expanding their digital presence. Te Tahi had explored this idea before - but after receiving unaffordable quotes, they shelved it.

When we heard that, we urged them: “Put it back on the table. Let us put in a proposal. We’re confident we can make this work for you.”

And we’re so glad they did.

Using our not-for-profit rate, we were able to bring their concept to life - and start helping them get donations coming in. No flashy marketing. Just a smart, functional platform that lets the community give directly where it’s needed most.

Lately, over 80% of our new projects have come from clients asking us to take over from their existing web designer or agency.

It’s been a bit surprising. And honestly…a bit satisfying too.

Because for a long time, it felt like we were working so hard just to be seen. As a small studio, we’ve put in the hours - building a reputation, producing great work, staying competitive - only to lose out on jobs we knew we could do better.

We’ve had friends, contacts, and potential clients go with bigger studios. We’d see their new websites go live and think: They paid how much…for that?

One pitch still sticks with us. We nailed it.
Our portfolio was stronger.
Our proposal was clearer.
Our pricing was realistic - not too low, not inflated.
Hosting and support? Far more sustainable.

But we didn’t get it. Why?

“Because you haven’t had big enough clients.”

The irony is…we have.

We’ve worked across national portfolios. Big work. Big impact. Just maybe not the flashiest names. And maybe that was our mistake - we focused on showcasing the quality of our work, not the notability of our clients.

But things have changed.

Now? Those clients we lost 18 months ago are getting back in touch. Others are asking to make the switch to Bread.

And they’re telling us:
“We’re not being supported.”
“We can’t afford to make updates.”
“The relationship just isn’t there anymore unless we’re paying more.”

It’s been a huge lesson in perseverance. In staying true to who we are. In believing that being a small, thoughtful, values-based studio actually matters.

We don’t want to wine and dine you. We want to design for you. We want to support you. Stick with you. Be a partner that doesn’t disappear after go-live.

So, if you’re a small business trying to hang in there, or a studio wondering if staying the course is worth it - it is.

Well - this one was a whirlwind.

We were originally engaged by The Studio of Saint Philomena for some video work. But while filming, the conversation turned to a problem they were facing:

A new website that wasn’t progressing.
A disconnect with their current designer.
60,000 prayer cards going to print - with a QR code linking to a website that didn’t exist yet.
And just 12 days until release.

We could feel the stress. We could understand the pressure. After one more shot with their existing designer, they came back to us: “We need your help.”

We were handed the files…two days before those prayer cards were set to go live.

Two days to design and build a website from scratch.

And you know what? We did it.
Five-page website.
Fully functional.
Delivered on deadline.

We’ll be rolling out Phase Two with more time to breathe. But for now? We’re proud. Proud to have helped them avoid a major headache. Proud to have been trusted to step in at the last minute. Proud to have delivered.

Sometimes design isn’t about long timelines and perfect conditions. Sometimes it’s about getting it done - well, fast, and with care.

There's nothing more satisfying than sharing a successful project - like our rebranding of The Independent Pharmacy Group (The IPG). This group supports independent pharmacies across Aotearoa, and their old branding was ready for a refresh. We stepped in to give it a modern, vibrant makeover.
