The safest AI tool and the risky one are often the exact same product. The only difference is whether you are paying for it.

Most business owners treat the paid tier as a features question. More messages, faster model, nice to have. It is not. Free tools are free because your data is the payment, and everything you paste in becomes training material. Somewhere in the States a confidential contract went in that way, and later surfaced when a stranger asked the model about that company. Paying switches model training off. That is the entire difference between a tool that is dangerous with your Xero and one that is not.

Most people met AI and thought about what it could do for them. He met it and realised it had just made his degree pointless.

Blake Harkness is a fractional AI engineer out of Christchurch. He trains teams and builds AI systems for New Zealand businesses, runs Young Kiwis in AI, and was picked for a national delegation to China to see where this is all heading. He was halfway through an engineering degree when he ran his coursework through ChatGPT and watched it come back correct, and took the harder read: if this can do the work, the work is not where the value sits anymore.

If you are curious about AI but not sure where it fits in your business, this is the episode that gets specific. He walks through a real client and exactly what got handed over: the Xero invoicing, the same enquiries answered over and over, the calendar juggling that eats a Friday.

Scott sat Blake down and asked the questions NZ business owners are actually stuck on.

Argue with an idiot and you just make two.

Just before that, Darren Pratley makes the point that as soon as someone is stressed, angry or frustrated, they stop thinking and start feeling. His example is blunt: someone winds you up, and next thing you have sacked them. The decision got made by the emotion, not by you.

Scott picked that line up from Brad Sugars as a teenager and it has stuck ever since. The point: the moment you engage emotionally, you have lost, because now there are two of you doing it. Step back, ask what happens if I do and what happens if I don't, and make the decision on facts instead of feelings.

Your reputation is an asset. It just does not show up anywhere on the balance sheet, so most owners spend it without noticing.

Digital Influence has a core value called results not reasons. When a partner or a web designer drops the ball, Scott's team fixes it. But it was not our fault comes up every time, and the answer is always the same. The client does not care why it went wrong. Most of the time they do not care why it went right either. They just want the result.

The interesting bit is what happens after. Clients find out later it was never Digital Influence that made the mistake, and they ask why on earth the team fixed it anyway. That question is the return on the investment.

It costs money on the day. It builds the one asset a competitor cannot copy or undercut.

The most valuable call you can make has no agenda attached to it.

Darren Pratley started with no database, no bookings and no clients. He gave himself one rule: 10 calls a day. Not 10 prospects. Just 10 people. Past clients, current clients, referral partners, mates.

The opening line never changes. Hey, I just thought I would give you a call and see how things have been going for you. How things have been going for you, not for him. Then he listens, because he actually wants to know if there is a problem he can help with.

Most people only pick up the phone when they need something, which is exactly why it never works. Ask Darren what that habit has been worth across his career and he shrugs and says millions.

Ten calls. Half an hour. Anyone can do it, almost nobody does.

Results In Action 🚀

Quality traffic and poor conversion are two different problems.

A client came to us wanting more enquiries from Google Ads. Early on we could see the traffic was already good — the right people were landing on the site. They just weren't converting.

So instead of touching the ad spend, we looked at what happened after the click. A few simple changes to the landing page closed the gap between the promise in the ad and the experience on the page.

Their conversion rate climbed. A week later, this came through: "We've been really busy (the good busy!) and had many enquiries."

Most owners treat their numbers as something to report on. The businesses that grow treat them as something to play against.

Darren Pratley's first question walking into a business is show me your scoreboard. Not the financials. The numbers your team can actually see. Calls made, meetings had, proposals out and followed up.

Two things happen once they are visible. The numbers tell you the real story of what is going on. And they fire people up, because now there is a goal, a gap, and a team deciding how to close it.

That is the difference between measuring a business and running one.
