Too many businesses are skipping basic marketing fundamentals and jumping to social media and paid activity without the solid foundations needed for success.

These businesses are often left wondering why the pretty consumer facing content and their precious marketing dollars are failing to engage prospective customers - let alone converting them.

Stop wasting your time with social media activity, content creation and paid ads until…

✅ You have a documented business plan and marketing strategy designed to work towards your business goals for the next 6-12 months.
✅ Your entire team fully understand why you are in business and what your values are as a brand. Not just the token trust & quality BS, but the real WHY you wake up everyday and do the doing.
✅ You're offering something unique to your competitors - either in the products / services, or the way you operate your business.
✅ You know (not assuming) you're giving your customers what they really need.
✅ You have set up processes and tools (websites, apps, workflows, customer service) that allow you to operate efficiently - and your customers to seamlessly enquire, purchase, or book.

Have you laid the proper groundwork and set your business up for success?

Wondering whether jumping on the Threads band wagon is worth your time and effort? 🤔

🚨 Spoiler Alert 🚨 - It’s not!

Threads is a new Twitter like social platform where you share thoughts (in less than 500 characters + an image of gif if you choose) and being a conversation with your community.

Does your business currently use Twitter for business? If not, then the short answer is - cut Threads from your marketing strategy.
If yes? Then the answer is maybe - if you have the time and resources needed to manage it effectively.

Let's break it down...

✅ Yes it’s easy to grow and audience by migrating your existing IG following to Threads.
✅ Yes it’s a shiny new toy and the Meta powers that be are pushing for its success.
✅ Yes it’s a great platform for direct community engagement.

❌ No it’s not a place to sell your products and services - major ick.
❌ No it’s nothing new to the social media scene - it’s just like Twitter (which in the business world is a glorified customer service portal).
❌ No you can’t just repost your FB and IG content to Threads - another major ick.
❌ No it's not essential to your business success.
❌ No it's not worth adding to you workload and stretching yourself thin over yet another social media platform.

In summary, for most businesses Threads will suck your time and energy while giving you no real business benefits. Focus that time and energy working on platforms that are currently helping to achieve your business goals.

What do you think? Will you be using Threads for business or pleasure?

5 HUGE (and all to common) Social Media Mistakes NZ Businesses Continue to Make:
Some of these might surprise you...

1️⃣ Failing to create a social media strategy: The number 1 rookie mistake.
💬 With so many different ways to use social media to achieve your business goals, not taking the time to think through or seek strategic advice to create a solid game plan will always put you on the back foot.

2️⃣ Using Social Media to Sell: Yes you read that correctly.
💬 Constantly bombarding your audience with sales pitches on social is a major ick.
Inspire me, education me, entertain me - but don’t you dare sell to me. Do enough to make me come to you without the icky pitch. There are other marketing channels that are far more effective for sales and conversions (Google, Email, Referral).

3️⃣ Creating Boring Content: Stop overestimating your audiences attention span.
💬 Example - Talking head stories are a thing of the past - talk to me, but do something interesting while you do it that helps get your message across. I’m not going to waste my time watching you talk and take 15 seconds to ask how my day is before you get to the point.

4️⃣ Not Utilising Platform Features: You need to use social media to its full potential or quit wasting your time.
💬 It’s important to engage your audience in a variety of creative ways. From feed posts to stories, quality image carousels to short-form video Reels - your content strategy needs to maximise the social platforms you are choosing to use.

5️⃣ Using Social Media in Isolation: Stop putting your eggs in one basket.
💬 Every marketing channel has a role to play in the success of your business. The goal is to create an effective matrix where all your channels work cohesively together to achieve your goals.

Are you guilty of any of these mistakes?
Do you have any mistakes you would add to this list?

As a marketer with 16+ years experience, here’s my take on the hot topic of AI and the ethical implications of using artificial intelligence in content creation.

☢️ The bottom line:
- If you don’t have the ability to articulate your own thoughts, ideas and words on a particular topic, you have no place producing content related to said topic.

Take the digital marketing industry for example:
😡 Unfortunately, this industry is already full of fake gurus, get rich quick gimmicks and just generally inexperienced and unqualified marketers taking advantage of many businesses.

How can we trust the content we consume is coming from their own intellectual property or artificially generated to deceive audiences to believe the ideas are based on experience and competence in this space? 🤷‍♀️

Even more reason to be extremely careful where you choose to take business and marketing advice. Trust, transparency and authenticity will trump the convenience of AI any day.

In saying this, there is most definitely a place for AI in marketing that shouldn’t be ignored - stay tuned for more!

It’s been a month!
A month of road trips and client visits around the region, website launches, record conversion rates, plus plenty of wonderful training and strategy sessions.

But I’m ready for a break - and looking forward to jumping on a plane to Fiji next weekend with my son and a big pile of Tessa Bailey books! 🌴🌊🤓

April marks my 37th birthday and 5 years of Rebel Influence. It’s the perfect time to reset and reflect.

I’ll always be grateful to do what I love everyday and to those who put their trust in me to help their business succeed.

If there's one event you support this year, please make it this one. 💛

The Cancer Society Canterbury West Coast invite you to their 'Too Many Cooks' fundraising dinner here in Christchurch on March 24th.

I didn't realise the extent of the role The Cancer Society Canterbury West Coast play in supporting both individuals and whānau going through cancer until I started working with them back in 2020.

I have seen first hand the challenges their incredible team has faced over recent years with so many fundraising events having to be cancelled. And the heartbreaking effects this has had on the organisation.

If you are in a position to purchase a ticket or table for this wonderful event, please help support them and the thousands of kiwis in our region who will be diagnosed with cancer this year.

Visit www.toomanycooks.co.nz for all the info and to book your ticket.

It doesn’t matter if Suzi runs the local community page - this doesn’t mean she has the necessary skills or experience to execute a successful social media strategy, create quality content and help you reach your business goals.

Your in-house social media manager should (at a bare minimum) tick all of the below boxes:

✅ Really care about your business and its success
✅ Have a positive attitude towards Social Media
✅ Have a willingness to learn
✅ Have enough capacity in their role to give these channels the attention they need and deserve
✅ Have an eye for detail and know their way around a smart phone
✅ Have a basic understanding of how social media can work alongside your other marketing channels to impact your business

Social Media is an incredibly effective business tool that should be taken seriously.

Celebrating some 'sweet' January results for one of my tastiest clients - Pot Pourri 🍬

Before you scroll on by ... For those who don't care about the geeky marketing numbers - their famous handmade fudge is so delicious and their gift boxes make perfect Valentine's Day gifts 😉 (you can order online in their link in bio) 💕

January has historically been a slow month for online sales of the famous Akaroa fudge - but last month our Meta ad campaigns achieved a 4.8% conversion rate (about 2% above the monthly average) and a ROA (return on ad spend) of 350%.

📈 So why the jump in January results? 📈

For a lot of my ad management clients I like to test in January. Most advertisers pull back their spending after the holidays and ads become cheaper - so less risk if my testing doesn’t pay off.

With Pot Pourri's conversion campaign for fudge sales, the only change I made was to the cold audience. (be sure to only change 1 element at a time when testing)

✅ I dropped the detailed targeting completely
✅ I expanded the geo location to all of NZ
✅ Slightly increased my age range
✅ Stuck to female only

This created a 1 million + audience size. This not only gives me a larger catchment of potential customers, more importantly it allows the algorithm to learn more about my ideal customer and serve my ad to people within my audience they think are most likely to covert.

The 'broad- targeted' audience strategy really seems to be working well for many advertisers in recent months. Since the data restrictions from iOS, Meta seems to want bigger, slightly more general audiences for top of the funnel advertising.

🤔 If you're not getting the results you want from your paid ads, it might be worth loosening the reigns (while still being relevant) and seeing what results a larger audience size can bring you.

02/02/2023

When people asked me my thoughts on starting a business, one thing I would always say is that you have to have the right mindset. 🤯

That was my nice way of saying - you have to be mentally tough, you have to be able to keep your s**t together in hard times, you have to be resilient, you can't let your critics affect you - and you can't sabotage your own potential with self doubt and imposter syndrome.

Then I realised - building your mental strength is essential for more than just business, it's essential to living life.

Mentally tough people treat their mind like a muscle - they train it to be strong AND take care of it through recovery.

✅ 4 Ways to Build Your Mental Strength:

💪 Practice mindfulness. Become in-tune and self-aware of your own strengths, weaknesses, feelings, triggers.
💪 Be open to new experiences and willingly put yourself in situations that feel uncomfortable.
💪 Look to find the positives before the negatives, talking kindly and productively to yourself.
💪 Have strong core values that guide your choices. Back yourself by knowing what drives you.

✅ 4 Ways to Practice Recovery:

💟 Feel what you need to feel (vent when you’re angry, cry when your sad, frustrated, overwhelmed, happy, you don't even need a reason)
💟 Don’t dwell too long on negative feelings.
💟 Learn your own mechanisms for working through difficult emotions effectively and efficiently (write, talk to a friend, make an action plan, deal with this issue and then move on).
💟 Escape. When your mind won't stop running away with you I suggest diving into a good book and embrace the distraction.

💬 I would love to hear your thoughts on mental strength. How do you train your mind to deal with everyday and extreme challenges? What recovery do you do to take care of your mental state?

It feels so good to be back in action after been sick all last week with an awful cold 🤧

Fellow business owners will understand there really is no such thing is a sick day.
(When I had Covid last year it took me three days to do a change over at my Airbnb because i used all my daily energy to make one bed! 🤦🏼‍♀️)

I’m not one to take my health for granted.
I also don’t take for granted the kindness and understanding of my amazing clients when I do happen to get sick and have to shift meetings & training sessions. You guys really are the best!

Welcome to Rebel Influence

Welcome to Rebel Influence - a freelance marketing service driven by a passion for helping businesses succeed through clever and creative digital marketing.

My name's Aleisha Duncan and I first fell in love with digital marketing 12 years ago.

Over the years, I have been blown away by the rapid pace in which the digital marketing movement has swept the world. One minute businesses were buying print ads and locking in radio slots for the month and the next we were building responsive websites and setting up Google AdWords campaigns. It's an ever-evolving industry and one that can seem overwhelming and difficult for many businesses to understand.

I'm here to make things easy for you. To help you decide the best marketing strategy to fit your business - all within your budget and resources.
