Aotearoa’s second best are now the second best in the world.

Ruamata Pure OCC have claimed silver in the Open Men’s V6 1500m at the Va’a World Sprints, crossing the line in 6:44.95.

Aotearoa dominated the final line-up, with four NZ crews lining up alongside one team from Tahiti and one from Hawai‘i. In a fight right to the finish, Pure OCC dug deep to edge out Team Pineula for silver.

This one also carries a little extra meaning. After more than 20 years paddling together, this could possibly be their last 1500m race in the Open Men’s division, as members of the crew begin making their way into the Masters age grades.

Rāhia caught up with Wiri Hohepa, Mitch Zandstra, Nona Taute, Courtney Higgins, Manawa Irwin and Sam Baker moments after they came off the water as world silver medallists.

Scattered thoughts in a post: What can I say? First holiday in how long? It was a shock to my system not working💅🏼. Doha airport: it’s like a city contained within a massive building. Prague: a diamond in the rough and magical at night (if you love Harry Potter, this place is for you) ✨ Price: being there for my cousin’s special day… I would do it all over again in a heartbeat 💍 I was lucky enough to have that one week free. Elope: her vision for her wedding was unmatched, intimate and iconic places that photos couldn’t do justice. H**p cafes: didn’t get to make it inside one (I’m not a smoker btw 😂) but I’m always down for experiences. Let’s just say I inhaled a lot while I walked past them 👀 which leads me to questionable decisions: questionable things I would change 💀 that’s life I guess, I’ll have to live with it 🤦🏼‍♀️… jumping: seriously thinking about jumping off the skytower this weekend cause I can 🤷🏼‍♀️. August: just around the corner and let’s say I won’t be spending my birthday in NZ for the first time… until next time, ciao baby 💃🏽✨

From Ngā Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua o Aotearoa 2026 to Te Matatini, two sisters continue to inspire one another.

This week, it was Materoa Leatham-Tai Tin's turn to take the national stage with Tūranga Wāhine, Tūranga Tāne, following in the kapa haka footsteps of her tuakana, Jessikha.

Kua tamō te Kāreti o Te Aute i te whakataetae kapa haka a motu mō ngā tau e waru, engari i tēnei rā, tū anō ai rātou, hei māngai mō te kura. Eight years after their last appearance, Te Aute College returns to the National Secondary Schools Kapa Haka competition.

The only single-sex school on this year's stage, Te Aute is also looking to the future, with 75% of the kapa made up of junior students.

Ahead of their 6:35pm performance tonight, tutors and members reflect on what this return means, the pride of representing Te Aute College, and the legacy they're building for the next generation.
