Gore, this is a goodie! ๐Ÿ˜„

One of NZโ€™s most loved larrikins - Tom Sainsbury - Comedian and Snapchat Dude - is coming to town as part of Tussock Country Music Festival.

Known for his iconic Kiwi characters and razor-sharp observations, Tomโ€™s performed all over the country and noticed one thing: people from Gore always turn up. Now heโ€™s returning the favour with a night of comedy packed with rural humour, relatable yarns and classic Tom moments.

๐Ÿ“ Where: Pioneer Rugby Club
๐Ÿ—“ When: Sunday 24 May | 5โ€“7pm
๐Ÿ”ž Adult themes, suitable for teens upwards

Donโ€™t miss this rare chance to see Tom Sainsbury live in Gore - itโ€™s going to be a cracker of a night.

Help stop the spread of the yellow-legged hornet in Auckland.

Biosecurity New Zealand has confirmed the first-ever discovery of a yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina) in Aotearoa โ€” a queen found building a nest right here in Glenfield. The nest was destroyed, but with summer ahead, any undetected nests could threaten our bees, growers, and ecosystems.

These hornets are highly aggressive predators of honeybees and native pollinators, and experts say we have just one season to get on top of this before it becomes a major problem.

ROADING REPORT
If youโ€™ve been out and about around the District, youโ€™ll have seen just how much damage Thursdayโ€™s storm caused, especially to trees.

The cleanup is well underway, but the impact has been significant, and itโ€™s taking time to clear everything.

Our roading maintenance contractor has been working tirelessly to remove fallen trees and debris from affected roads. Some routes are being reopened as theyโ€™re cleared, but others will need to stay closed a little longer until PowerNet crews have had a chance to make the areas safe by dealing with downed power lines.

๐Ÿš— If youโ€™re travelling around the District, please take extra care:

โ€ข Some trees and branches that were weakened in the storm may still come down if windy weather returns.
โ€ข Thereโ€™s still a lot of debris close to the edges of roads in some areas.

If you spot any new fallen trees or hazards on the road, please contact our Roading team (phone 209-0330) so we can get it sorted as quickly as possible.

โš ๏ธ Current Road Closures:
โ€ข McGill Road โ€“ from Glencoe Highway (SH96) to Barron Road
โ€ข Heaps Road โ€“ from Old Coach Road (SH93) to River Road
โ€ข Pope Road โ€“ from Rapid #38 to the end of the road
โ€ข Pinnacle Road โ€“ from the end of the seal to Morrison Road (power lines hanging over the road)
โ€ข Terrace Road โ€“ from Glencoe Highway (SH96) to Craig Road
โ€ข Herron Road โ€“ from Greenvale Road to McMillan Road
โ€ข Clement Road โ€“ from Gordon Road to Andrews Road

A huge thank you to everyone for your understanding, and a special mention to our contractors and the PowerNet teams, who are working hard to get things back to normal. ๐Ÿ’ช

Check your lights peeps... I passed 4 cars with one headlight out between MVM and Gore on Friday at 7pm

Today is a timely opportunity to check your vehicleโ€™s lights, with the much-needed break in bad winter weather.

Weโ€™ll all have seen people travelling around with one headlight not working, or a rear light not working.

Itโ€™s vital that both your headlights are working โ€“ not only so you can see in low light or at night (stating the obvious), but so people coming towards you can see you, especially in bad weather conditions.

Also check your rear position lights โ€“ the lights that come on when you turn on your headlights โ€“ along with your stop lights (brake lights).

While weโ€™re at it, check how youโ€™re using your headlights and your fog lights.

Your headlights should be set to dipped. Turn full beam off. By law you must have your headlights dipped when you're around people. That means you should only have your headlights on full beam when you're not around other people and travelling on an unlit or poorly-lit road.

Your fog lights should be set to off. By law you can only use your vehicle's fog lights when visibility is severely reduced, such as in fog or snow. That means you must turn off your vehicle's fog lights if it's not foggy or snowing. You can't use your fog lights when the weather is clear, even at night.

When the weather is bad, always check our pages to see if state highways are affected before you travel. You can find more information in this post: https://www.facebook.com/nztransportagency/posts/pfbid0FSzkpU3WTJ7YDcNHKQGD6KjfbxEqSWQgvezDsHB8VZgoxtTMTmS6j5erpU55NPRzl

Winter driving means it's hard for cars to see you behind trucks with water spray. This isnt helped with grey or darker cars.Crashes hurt. Lets not have one.๐Ÿ˜‡

If your vehicle has automatic headlights, donโ€™t rely on them in bad weather. Turn your lights on manually.

Newer vehicles have automatic headlights that turn on when it's dark, but youโ€™ll often need to manually turn the headlights on in dim conditions during the day โ€“ the automatic function often doesn't activate during daytime, even when visibility is low.

Also, turn your headlights on dipped when itโ€™s raining โ€“ youโ€™ll likely need to do this manually during the day.

You should use your lights when itโ€™s raining because many of us have silver, grey, or white vehicles which easily blend into the road, grey sky, and water spray. Having your headlights on dipped makes you more visible to everyone and helps you see the road.

Put simply: If your wipers are on, your lights should be on too.

Keep in mind that you canโ€™t have your headlights on full beam (also known as "high beam") when youโ€™re around people โ€“ your headlights must be dipped, even in heavy rain. Practically, that means you should only consider using full beam when you're not around other people and youโ€™re driving on an unlit or poorly-lit road.
