Confession: I’m binge-watching The West Wing (again). Aaron Sorkin's writing makes me want to sit up straighter, speak more eloquently, and think harder for every word.

This rewatch is sitting differently with me this time though, now I see how they challenge the instinct to always simplify for your audience. The dialogue is dense, fast, and brimming with ideas.

Often, the rule in business storytelling is to aggressively simplify. ‘Make it digestible.’ ‘Write for low reading levels.’ And yes, there are good reasons for that. But if we always default to the simplest language, do we risk losing resonance, emotion, a rhythm that actually helps a story connect?

Great communications doesn’t always just pass on information. Words have power, and if we want people to lean in and act, we sometimes have to trust our audiences to appreciate a well-crafted narrative. After all, we know who you are and what clicks for you...don’t we?

The West Wing trusted its audience to keep up. Loyal watchers like me didn't just get it, they loved it. Good business storytelling can work the same way. Respect the (actual) intelligence in the room.

It’s a wet weekend and I’ve got five more seasons to get through so, as President Bartlet would say... What’s next?

Is this little corner of my veggie patch indicative of my recent new business efforts: a bit of love and attention to create the right conditions and the green shoots will ROCKET?

(Sorry...I couldn't help it.)

C'mon...it was a bit over-ambitious from the start, wasn't it.

So, we know what will happen. I'll start with the best intentions and then I'll get busy and only jump on here when I'm feeling particularly insightful.

I'm safe to promise you no spamming, that's for sure. But hopefully the occasional gem.

See you soon!

Yes, it's that time again - July has come round quicker than ever. Time to do just a little bit to help those suffering with this horrible disease. If you'd like to donate the price of a w**e to help charities that support people with cancer, here's my Dry July page:

I have signed up for Dry July to raise money for people affected by cancer.
