Security updates available for Adobe, Chrome, Firefox, VMWare, and Zoom
Several updates have been made available including those for Adobe, Chrome, Firefox, VMWare, and Zoom.

A quick reminder for home users and small businesses: updates are now available for several common apps and tools, including Adobe, Chrome, Firefox, VMware, and Zoom.

This matters because updates often fix security weaknesses as well as bugs. If you use these apps for browsing, video meetings, PDFs, or business systems, keeping them current helps reduce avoidable risk.

Practical step: open each app you use and check for updates, or restart your computer if updates are already waiting to install. For browsers, go to the menu and look for “About” or “Help” to trigger the update check.

If you’re in Kaiapoi or North Canterbury and would like a hand checking your home or business computers, Techmedics Ltd can help.

Effective Patch Management Strategies: 7 Best Practices | Huntress

Stop letting bad actors exploit old bugs. Build a practical patch management strategy to keep them out and learn to stay secure without all the fluff.

Software updates can be easy to put off, but they often fix security holes that criminals already know about.

For home users and small businesses, keeping Windows, phones, browsers, antivirus, and business apps up to date is one of the simplest ways to reduce risk. It also helps avoid problems like slow devices, software errors, and unexpected downtime.

Practical step: set your main devices and apps to update automatically, then restart them regularly so updates can finish installing. If you run a business, it’s also worth keeping a simple list of your devices and checking they’re all being updated.

If you’re not sure what needs updating, or you’d like a hand setting up a sensible update routine, Techmedics in Kaiapoi can help.

Microsoft 365 Hardening and Huntress Managed ISPM

Most Microsoft 365 environments are missing more than half of the recommended security controls, even with tooling in place. Here's why that happens and what Huntress Managed ISPM does about it.

Microsoft 365 is common in many small businesses — email, Teams, OneDrive, and shared documents all in one place.

A recent Huntress article highlights a useful point: even when Microsoft 365 is set up and working, some important security settings may still be missing or not fully configured. That can matter because one weak account setting can make it easier for someone to access emails, files, or business data.

Practical step: check that multi-factor authentication is turned on for every Microsoft 365 account, especially admin accounts.

If you’re unsure what your Microsoft 365 security settings look like, Techmedics Ltd in Kaiapoi can help review them in plain English and suggest sensible improvements — no scare tactics, just practical advice.

Cybercriminals: the 'auditors' you never hired.

Cyber criminals often look at your business the way an auditor would — checking for weak spots, old systems, exposed accounts, and easy ways in.

For small businesses and home users, this matters because the “small” things are often what get noticed first: reused passwords, overdue updates, old email accounts, or files shared with too many people.

One practical step: take 10 minutes this week to review your important accounts and turn on multi-factor authentication where you can, especially for email, banking, Microsoft 365, Xero, and social media.

If you’re in Kaiapoi or nearby and you’re not sure where to start, Techmedics Ltd can help you check the basics calmly and practically.

Your Profile Is a Dossier. Here's Who's Reading It.

Your social media profiles are an attacker's dossier. Learn how attackers use public data to build attack playbooks and what you can do to give them less to work with.

What you share publicly online can tell strangers more than you might expect.

For home users and small businesses, public social media details can help scammers sound believable — names, job roles, holidays, suppliers, staff changes, birthdays, or even the way you write. That information can be used to craft more convincing fake messages, invoices, or password reset requests.

One simple step: review your Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram privacy settings, and remove public details that don’t need to be public — especially phone numbers, email addresses, staff roles, and travel plans.

If you’re in Kaiapoi or North Canterbury and want a calm second opinion on your privacy or business security settings, Techmedics Ltd is happy to help.

How are scammers trying to reach you?

Scammers don’t just use email anymore. For home users and small businesses, the first contact is often a phone call, text message, social media message, or even an online advert that looks genuine.

This matters because a quick reply, click, or payment can lead to lost money, stolen accounts, or a lot of stress to sort out afterwards.

A simple habit that helps: if a message or call asks you to act urgently, stop and check it another way first. For example, contact the company using a phone number or website you already trust — not the link or number in the message.

If you’re in Kaiapoi or nearby and you’re unsure whether something is legitimate, Techmedics can help you take a calm look before you click.

Scams often start with a text, call, or an ad or message on social media. So, if you have a phone or you’re on social media, chances are you’ve heard from a scammer recently.

Researchers left AI agents alone in a virtual town and watched it all unravel.

AI tools are getting better at doing tasks on their own, but they still need clear limits and human oversight.

A recent Malwarebytes article looks at researchers testing AI “agents” in a simulated town. Even with rules in place, the agents made poor and unexpected decisions. For home users and small businesses, the takeaway is simple: don’t treat AI as something you can fully “set and forget” yet.

Practical step: if you use AI for emails, documents, customer replies, coding, accounts, or admin, make sure a real person checks anything important before it is sent, saved, or acted on.

If your Kaiapoi or North Canterbury business is starting to use AI tools and you’re unsure how to do it safely, Techmedics can help you think through sensible settings and safeguards.

Told not to commit crimes, the AI agents mostly did anyway. Arson, violence, romance, self-deletion, and general chaos quickly ensued.
