IMAGES, IMAGES
Images are a such a huge part of what attracts people to your website at first glance and encourages them to stay. And they are the very essence of how your website feels.
The images are a critical factor in what defines your site's reason for being, help convey a message and support your wonderful content!
Whether you engage a photographer to take your images or you use library stock images, put together a brief so you stick to the best direction.
Here are a few ideas to help:
1 Make sure the images are relevant to your brand and explain your brand.
Questions to ask your self are:What do you want your business known for? Fun and family? Class and style? Imagery is your tool to help establish your brand.
2 Showcase real people rather than cliches.
Stock photos can look outdated and rushed. And you don't want the image you use to be on hundreds of other sites if you can avoid it. Customers want to see the real faces in your business.
3 Choose high-quality images
Make sure you pick high quality images with large pixels. Think about how your website is going to look on both a desktop and a mobile device. When adjusting the size of an image, always keep dimensions the same and crop if necessary. If you increase an image past it’s original size, you’ll decrease the quality. While you're thinking about quality keep in mind the mood and tome and colour (or black and white).
4 Review licensing.
Not only is it discourteous to use images on your website without permission but you could also be sued. So check it out before you use it!
5 Make the image do the talking
Use an engaging image. Content may be king but images can also be used get the point across and helps tell the story. You may nor need much content on the home page but a gorgeous image which says it all - just remember you need content everywhere else!
6 Optimize for search engine optimisation
It's so worth your time to optimize every image you upload to ensure the search engines can easily index them. Name each file correctly - not as photo1.jpg but as
bluesuedeshoes.jpg. be consistent, no punctuation or spaces.
7 Photo placement, subject and style
Where on the website will the photos be used (and maybe you would use them in print as well). Think about the subject matter (location too) and the style - traditional, abstract, product, lifestyle etc
8 Consider hiring a photographer.
Sometimes your best option is to hire a professional photographer, especially if you can't find exactly the right images. If you’re working on photos for your new website design, it’s certainly worth investing in a photo shoot particularly with your own employees.
