If you're planning to hire marketers, make sure that you've got the time available to be responsive.

One of the biggest barriers to success in online marketing is a breakdown of communication.

This is the case regardless of whether you're hiring an agency, employees, or contract workers.

The solution is simple: Set aside time to review work and be responsive. If you don't understand something, ask questions.

In most markets, 3% of people, on average, are ready to buy.

So if your website is just a hard sales pitch and you don't have any way to nurture people, you're hoping that...

- The 3% of your audience who finds you when they're ready to buy.
- They don't get distracted.
- Once they find your website, they know, like and trust you enough to get in touch.
- They show up to the call or go through the checkout process.
- And then they buy from you.

That's a lot of assumptions to base your financial future on!

"I want to do marketing. Which channel should I promote on? Where do I start?"

We get this question very often. But it's usually premature.

For many smaller B2B service companies, our advice is this:

"You're not ready to do marketing just yet... Go out and talk to your customers, discover their biggest pain points, improve your offer, and find ways to overdeliver to the point that your clients are thrilled...

Increase the amount they spend over their lifetime, increase your capacity to deliver so that you can take on more clientele, and THEN start doing marketing."

Yes, sure, having branding and a website is helpful. But when you're in the earlier stages of growth, overinvesting in marketing can be a big waste of resources.

"Don't build on borrowed land!"

We often see companies being overly reliant on sources that they cannot control.

For example, if 100% of your leads come from Facebook ads, you'll be in trouble if your account gets banned tomorrow.

So, what's the solution?

- Own your audience by building an email list of your ideal customers.

- Offering lots of value in the form of a lead magnet is a great way to capture email addresses.

- Create content on platforms that you own (like your blog or podcast) and drive traffic from borrowed audiences (such as advertising, social media posts and collaborations) to your owned content.

These are just 3 ways to own your audience.
