🎄⁣ We could get all deeeeeep here…⁣

Reflect on the epic journey I've and likely you have had this years, orrrr we could use this final month of the year to reflect on some of the little, yet big things that often get overlooked, because for me this looks like: ⁣

〰️Mastering the art of poaching eggs ⁣
〰️ Navigating my fiancé’s dream of Persian rugs scattered all over our wedding ⁣
〰️ Snagging the ‘Most Frequent Walker’ award at my local stopbank⁣
〰️ Learning to breathe through my nose every time I see the price of cheese at the supermarket ⁣
〰️ Becoming pink and red’s #1 fan ⁣

Because hey, whether it’s big wins, small victories or just those moss covered garden stones along the way- I hope you take time to celebrate them all this Chrimbo.⁣

And to everyone who’s showed me love, whether you booked a storytelling coaching session, liked or shared a post, or even braved telling a story for the first time, thank you, you’re the Christmas MVP.⁣

Merry Christmas🎄⁣

I remember it like it was yesterday: staying over at my bestie’s place on a school night in 2005.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It was Christmas, and clearly, our parents were living by the “f**** it, it’s Christmas” mantra- still floats, by the way.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Then, her mum (the coolest mom) pulled out a VCR tape of Love Actually.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Looking back, I'm not sure why she thought it was okay for two naïve primary school girls with our family-sized bag of Maltesers to watch a movie with that many layers, but heeeeey, we all know the scenes.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And my goodness, I’m so glad she did… Because it was in that moment that I fell hard for Hugh Grant, his quirky dance moves, sweet romance with Natalie and of course, that dreaaaamy face.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Fast forward 19 years, and it turns out my childhood crush, Hugh Grant and his Love Actually producers know more than just romantic lessons.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
They’ve got storytelling down, too.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Here’s the storytelling formula they nailed:⁣⁣
⁣⁣
→ Relatability⁣⁣
→ Emotion⁣⁣
→ Knowing your audience⁣⁣
→ Humour⁣⁣
→ Simplicity⁣⁣
→ Surprise⁣⁣
⁣⁣

Storytelling marketing is like going for a coffee date with a friend

Except, five minutes into what you thought was going to be a gossip-filled, deep-and-meaningful chat at your fav local cafe, your friend starts reading the product label from their new jacket:⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“It’s 100% recycled material, cold wash only, needs a light iron.”⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Pardon?⁣⁣⁣
Yep, bizarre
⁣⁣
You’d probably ask yourself why you’re friends with this strange human
Annnnnd you’d look for an excuse to wrap things up
⁣⁣
But what if, instead, your friend shared a story? Like how she unintentionally recreated ‘The Notebook’ scene during a weekend walk, while staying dry in the most waterproof jacket she bought on a whim
⁣⁣
Because, hello, Ryan Gosling 🔥🔥🔥
⁣⁣⁣
Now you’re laughing, picturing your friend with her soggy croissant and drowned-rat dog, and suddenly you kinda want to recreate your own Notebook moment with that jacket too (but with RG of course)
⁣⁣⁣
The same goes for your marketing: Although the features of what you're trying to sell are easy peasy to churn out, people can spot them a mile away. And they get bored
⁣⁣
But stories? They make people feeeeel something, keep them coming back for the next post and, let’s be honest, they’re probably going to wana buy your stuff.⁣⁣⁣

I’ve been told some frightening things as a storytelling strategist.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
But the scariest? ⁣⁣
“My story is really boring” ⁣⁣

And it terrified the crap out of me… Because it meant I had A LOT ‘undoing’ to do ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Because if I'm going to be completely honest, the best stories:⁣⁣

❌ Aren’t about you ⁣⁣
❌ Don’t mention how many years you’ve been in biz ⁣⁣
❌ Aren’t lengthy sob stories⁣⁣
❌ Certainly don’t mention your values⁣⁣
❌ And definitely aren’t just your ‘why’- that old chestnut.
⁣⁣
Instead,⁣⁣

The VERY best stories: ⁣⁣

✨ Make your customer the hero ⁣⁣
✨ Show how you can relate
✨ And unpack how you're going to make their life phenomenally better⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, having that boring story of yours is actually a REALLY good thing. ⁣⁣
Because you won’t be tempted to tell it 😜⁣
⁣⁣
We can leave that one at the back of the metal filing cabinet your husband bought home from the office junk clear out, ok?

⁣😬 Something you probably don’t want to hear… ⁣

Just creaming the sugar won’t bake you a cake⁣

Nor will buying protein powder magically make you fit ⁣

And signing up for a November masterclass? That likely won’t turn you into a marketing pro⁣

Because heartbreakingly on their own, they're small (but great) steps toward something bigger that you really want⁣

I mean what you really want is to be a chocolate-cake-devouring, fitspo queen with zero business worries all summer long, am I right?

Sign me up 🙋I want that too!

Annnd well, I hate to break it to you but the same thinking applies for storytelling⁣

When you tell one story, someone might become aware of who you are (or likely they’ll miss the post altogether 😂)

When you tell ten stories, that someone might start to warm towards you, reach out for a chat, or scroll back to read the posts they missed ⁣

When you tell twenty stories, that person can see what you bring to their Christmas dinner table and how you can help them thrive⁣ in 2025

So, if you’ve told one story and you didn’t see any results…
Get back on the horse⁣

Because you’re here to bake the entire cake, not just cream the sugar⁣!

Connection requires time⁣
Storytelling requires patience⁣

It hit me when I smashed a very precious jar of Raglan Food Co coconut yogurt on the floor...

Those marketing *gurus* have got it wrong!⁣

Because they told us: ⁣

“You need to connect with your audience! Show your true selves!” ⁣

So, we got vulnerable. We cried on camera and even tackled serious topics like the MeToo Movement. Then came a global pandemic, climate change and the rising price of Tasty cheese. ⁣

And suddenly, we got so damn serious 😬 ⁣

But guess what? 2024 studies show people want more joy⁣
Fortunately for you, joy is also scientifically proven to make someone buy...
💰💰💰⁣

While I spent years studying psychology to learn this, I owe it to you to share how joy can trigger someone's brain to buy (for free). ⁣

So go on, swipe left, your bottom line deserves a little boost. ⁣

And 14 when the first iPhone launched. ⁣⁣

I’d grown up with Woody and Buzz and envied those with iPhones, but I had no idea there was a bigger story behind their success. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, turns out Steve Jobs worked at Pixar?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And he brought the storytelling skills he learnt at Pixar to Apple… ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Yip, I had no idea that the same strategy that made me cry over plastic toys (I’m looking at you, Mr. Potato Head) was what had me saving my dollars for an iPhone.⁣⁣

That strategy?
Storytelling.⁣⁣

All along, it was storytelling that was making me feel part of something bigger.⁣⁣

How many times have you flipped through a cookbook, determined to make anything but nachos, only to say:

"Yep, nachos it is!"?⁣

I’ve done the same… but with my career 🫠

As a story-obsessed kid, I thought I’d study rocks… then psychology?

I’ve worked in school furniture, managed social media accounts, and even got hired as a food photographer - don’t ask.⁣

But as Seth Godin (and my pal Marisa ) said, “Lara, you need to find what makes ‘you’ you and double down on it.”⁣

So here I am. ⁣

No more dipping my toes, I’m going all in. Fully leaning into storytelling coaching and content writing.⁣

Because in a world that often doesn’t make sense, storytelling is the connection-building, brand-loving, ugly-crying strategy that no one’s talking about.

Sure, you might consider the dollar figure, but emotions are powerful drivers of decisions. And ⁣many brands miss the emotional mark. You need sales, but also that magic that makes people fall in love with you too. ⁣⁣⁣

Yip, although this broke my little writer’s heart - I get it. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
While posts take considerable time to plan, write, tweak and publish. ⁣⁣Stories take 20 seconds to post and organically have better reach. ⁣⁣

Not to mention that getting five likes feels like the same crushing disappointment as watching your double scoop of hokey-pokey ice cream take a nosedive onto the pavement right outside the dairy.

Quite frankly, it sucks. ⁣
So, why would you bother selling your soul to written posts? ⁣

Well, let me explain. ⁣
⁣⁣
I believe storytelling is where the true magic happens. It’s in these written words that experiences, moral lessons and ‘uh-huh that’s me-too’ moments are shared on a deeper level. ⁣A relationship level ya can't always access via stories. ⁣
⁣⁣
What I think the bigger fish we have to fry is, how do we get your story in front of the right eyes? ⁣Hmmmm. ⁣
⁣⁣
Perhaps it’s time we stopped relying so heavily on organic reach and invested in paid posts?⁣
⁣⁣
Or, maybe creating that email list to support your social media efforts isn’t such a bad idea?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
So, while you may choose to continue prioritising stories,
I wouldn’t be saying adios to posts altogether. ⁣⁣

Because ultimately, your posts serve as your shop window, working hard for you during the days, weeks, and months (I feel seen) when you're not active on stories.⁣

I recently sat in a café waiting for my decaf FW to cool to its perfectly scullable temperature. ⁣

At the table sat next to me three ladies who were admiring three mannequins in the shop next door. Each mannequin was wearing a different coloured coat. ⁣

Lady #1 “I like the pink one” ⁣
Lady #2 “Nah, the black one has my name on it”⁣
Lady #3 “Well if I’m honest, I’d go for the mustard one”⁣

And me, well I didn’t like any of them ⁣🤷‍♀️
But what it did remind me is that everyone is attracted to something different. ⁣

The same goes with marketing. ⁣

There will always be some that are attracted to your coats (products + services) ⁣
While others will scrunch up there nose and walk straight on by your shop window. ⁣

All I can say is, when you focus on staying unique, the right admirers will find you. ⁣
