🚨 UPDATE: Police have confirmed armed officers seen in Hāwera this morning were carrying out search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation.

Police were at two addresses from about 9.30am and say officers were armed as a routine precaution.

The operation prompted reports of Police cordons and a significant armed Police presence in the area.

Police say enquiries are ongoing.

TNA understands the searches relate to an arrest last week. A 28 year old man has been remanded in custody and is due to reappear in Hāwera District Court on 22 September on charges including possession of a firearm and presenting a firearm.

🚧CONFIRMED: SH3 through Awakino Gorge will reopen by 6pm today.

Waka Kotahi says conditions at the major slip site are dry enough for asphalting to go ahead, clearing the way for the highway to reopen this evening.

All four culverts are now installed and, once asphalting is complete, the work planned for this closure will be finished.

The highway will reopen under one-lane stop/go traffic management, with motorists advised to allow extra time and expect delays through the gorge.
