🚗 Mt Messenger back to two lanes from 5pm today

Good news for motorists travelling on State Highway 3.

Crews have spent the past two days scaling the steep rock face and removing loose material following a slip on Thursday.

Waka Kotahi has confirmed both lanes will reopen from 5pm this evening (Sunday).

🚨 Car crashes into garden in Whaitara | Waitara

A car came flying around the corner from Paris Street onto Cracroft Street at 6.07pm on Friday, crashing into a resident's garden opposite Waitara Central School.

The resident is now trying to identify those involved and is worried about whether her fish survived.

KURA/SCHOOL signs, bilingual road directions and te reo Māori pedestrian signals are already in use on roads across Aotearoa.

Yet TAIHOA and HAERE signs used at roadworks in North Taranaki were removed after Waka Kotahi confirmed they were not approved traffic control devices.

Motorists are being warned to expect delays of around 30 minutes as crews remove unstable material from a hillside following heavy rainfall.

Stop/go traffic management is in place, with the northern lane remaining closed until it is safe to reopen.

🟢 UPDATE: SH3 Awakino Gorge now open

State Highway 3 through Awakino Gorge has reopened following the earlier closure caused by heavy rainfall and flooding between Mokau and Mahoenui.

Motorists are advised to drive with care, particularly if wet conditions persist.

Footage shows the extent of the damage on State Highway 3 on Monday.

Waka Kotahi says the cause remains under investigation. The damaged surface has since been removed.
