⚠️ Important reminder for Bookkeepers, Tax Agents and anyone with access to client tax information.
Inland Revenue NZ has advised it is seeing an increase in compromised myIR logons. In some cases, unauthorised access has resulted in client returns being filed or amended and bank account details being changed. The activity appears to be linked to unexpected emails containing malicious links or attachments.
A few simple reminders:
✅ Be cautious of unexpected emails, links and attachments.
✅ Use strong, unique passwords.
✅ Make sure two-step verification (2SV) is enabled and working correctly.
✅ Review your myIR activity regularly.
✅ Act immediately if you notice anything unusual. Early escalation can significantly reduce the impact of a security incident.
As Bookkeepers, we spend a lot of time helping clients protect their businesses and financial information. It's just as important that we protect our own systems and client access.
