Parenting and Passports

Parenting and Passports Stories, systems and support to help you live your life to the fullest and without regrets We’re Colin, Elly and Little Miss from New Zealand.

In February 2017 we set off on the next part of our life journey to become location independent digital nomads. We were becoming increasingly unsettled with our life in our amazingly idyllic country, New Zealand. We’d gotten into a downward spiral with businesses that weren’t working and were rapidly eating away at everything we had, an out of kilter work-life balance, and a high level of stress t

hat was negatively impacting our family relationship and our health. We fully appreciate that big goals require dedication and a lot of hustle, but as family centred people we recognised our values were being too severely compromised in the process and that a new approach was needed. A few well-meaning friends and family members (whom we love dearly) suggested we get jobs (!?!!) even if just for a short time. Whilst we recognise that this path is the right one for many, for us it would have taken us further away from our purpose and calling and would have slowly destroyed our souls in the process. We’ve chosen the path of life by design. We love the thrills and challenges that come with getting outside of the box and are not scared to change tact when things aren’t working. Both Colin and I have always loved travelling and have missed having travel as part of our life in recent years. We’re aware that many people have the belief that travel with children is ‘too hard’ or that children will only be settled if they live in one place but we don’t share these beliefs. Instead we are excited to be able to expose our daughter to new cultures and challenges and hope that she will grow to be a truly global citizen who contributes positively to the world in her own meaningful way. We hear some say “oh that’s ok and easy for you because you’ve only got one and she’s not at school yet”. We don’t subscribe to this. We are part of an AMAZING facebook group called ‘world schoolers’ and on this we see countless examples of families who are happily choosing a life on the road, or one that involves regular travel, sometimes with four or five kids in tow. Will it be challenging? Heck yes, but probably not much more than parenting in general;)

For us, parenting, passports and profits is about having the opportunity to world school/un-school our daughter, spend lots of quality time together as a family, and make a meaningful contribution to the world. It’s about getting out of the rat race, enjoying our time on the planet and being part of something bigger than ourselves. For you, it could likely mean something completely different, and that is great. Maybe it means getting more balance in your life so you can attend your kids’ sports matches or school performances more regularly. Perhaps you want to tend to a travel or adventure itch that you’ve got and maybe you’re even wondering how you could involve your kids in that? Or maybe you’ve been sitting on an idea to start your own business to create a more balanced life for your family or even just a HAPPIER you but you just haven’t had the guts to get started? Everyone’s drivers and ambitions will be different. By being part of this community we hope that we can help you, one step at a time to get closer to whatever ‘living the dream’ means to you. Elly, Colin and Ayla xx

Appleton Park is a top pick for places to take the kids in Yeppoon. It features a playground with a climbing pyramid and small biking circuit, plus a skate park.

The park is next to the Yeppoon Lagoon and the beach, so it's ideal if you also want to swim and hang out for longer.

We loved our visit to the Capricorn Caves near Rockhampton/Yeppoon! We did the 45-minute Cathedral Cave tour, which is perfect for all ages and a great introduction to the beauty of the caves.

Although there are more adventurous cave tours on offer here (The Capricorn Explorer and Capricorn Adventurer), we still got to make our way through a tight space, discover various parts of the caves, and walk across a suspension bridge, which was fun.

Our favourite part was when we experienced the pitch black of the cave with all the lights out!

We'd definitely recommend visiting the Capricorn Caves if you're in the area.

If you've ever thought about taking your kids out of school to travel long-term, then check out this guest post from our friends Meet The Arshads.

Nadeem explains why they left the UK, how they connected with other families in Thailand, and why they keep returning.

Long-term travel with kids can feel lonely. Nadeem Arshad shares why connection matters and how Koh Lanta became one of Southeast Asia's most loved worldschooling hubs.

Emu Park is a gorgeous spot on the Capricorn Coast for families. Park at the singing ship, or start down the hill at the Emu Park skate park if your kids have wheels.

The singing ship is in the perfect spot to enjoy stunning views of the coastline (and yes, you can hear it sing if there's a bit of wind!). Signs from the viewing platform show the names of each island off the coast, and from there you can follow the Memorial Walk, along a short walkway to Emu Park main beach.

The beach is beautiful and there's also a covered playground (Kerr Park Playground) for the kids. It's definitely easy to spend a half or even a whole day enjoying Emu Park with kids.

It can be intense preparing to leave a location.

I turn into a crazy cleaning lady, intent on making everything as perfect as I can for the owner's return.

Fitting everything into our small collection of bags, usually including a number of extra kid things that we didn't have upon arrival.

Feelings of anxiety (me only🤣) hoping appliances are off, the door is locked, and the pets are fine.

Then the travel day...

We always try to make our next destination as close, cheap, and easy as possible.

But even Queensland on its own is huge, so traveling even a small part of it isn't nothing!

This time it was 11 hours on the train (very luxury train though!)

Then a 20 minute walk to our accommodation with all our bags at 2am (it builds character in the kids, right?!)

Then a trip to our new house sit the following day complete with tired, feral kids to meet the new homeowners. Luckily the owners are easy going, because at this point, our kids are not!

We are full time slow travellers of 9 years, but preparation and travel still has its challenges, almost every time!

But then... We settle into an idyllic rural setting (see pics!) and everyone starts to chill😎

The girls were chuffed to participate in an art exhibition with the Townsville Homeschoolers last week. The theme was Amazing Animals, held at the Townsville Heritage Centre.

Many of the homeschooling kids had recently completed an art course and used the canvas they created from the course for the exhibition. These two created their own at home despite having very little experience with paints. They both draw a lot (Ayla with pencils and Romy with markers), but this was their first try with acrylics on canvas.

The paintings turned out pretty awesome! We were super impressed by all of the homeschooled kids artwork and how professional it looked in the exhibition. What a fantastic experience for them all!

We had an incredible opening night with the artists (around 60 kids put in a piece) and their families. The exhibition was open to the public for the rest of the week.

The girls knew before they started that they wouldn't be able to keep this particular piece of art, due to our travel lifestyle. We travel only with what we can carry in our hands and on our backs. I can only imagine what it would be like to add these paintings to our loads when we're navigating on and off public transport🤣😅

But they were very happy to find a very good home for it, in an Airbnb accommodation in the centre of town! The owner was grateful to receive the artworks and she told us some travellers had already been admiring it!

The girls had a final photo with their masterpieces outside the Airbnb, in front of a very vibrant piece of street art. (See the final photo, although it does not capture the full image, which is of the singer Pink).

Well done Ayla on your first competition of the season in Mackay (level 4).

Thank you so much to Di, Mon, and the rest of the team at in Townsville for all the incredible training and support over the last three months.

We are honoured and grateful to have had the opportunity to train with your club during our time here. We will miss you and hope to see you again!
