Our team has reunited in South Africa for the production of this year’s Entrepreneur of the Year Awards! 🏆 This week, we've been running all over Joburg (with a quick trip up to Limpopo) to capture the incredible stories of some of the 15 finalists.
In this behind-the-scenes shot, Richmond KZN filmmaker Andile Mthembu is setting up a shotgun mic for an interview at a business premises in Soweto. 🎙️
Because we're traveling internationally, our gear list was carefully curated for the perfect balance of cinematic quality and mobility. Our main rig here is the Canon C50 full-frame cinema camera, paired with a Rode NTG1 XLR shotgun mic positioned just off-camera for crisp audio. We’re also mixing a single side light with the ambient window light to keep things looking natural. 💡
But the real MVP of this trip might just be the camera hiding in the bottom right: the brand-new DJI Osmo Pocket 4P. We barely managed to snag one of these from Oz before flying out, and it might be one of the few in SA right now! 🤯
We’ve been using the Osmo 4P as our "second shot" camera, capturing the wireless lav mic directly to it. This gives us fantastic audio redundancy alongside the NTG1 on the Canon system. Plus, the Osmo has been our absolute workhorse for B-roll and cutaways - it's small, nimble, and can squeeze into places where bigger cameras just can't go. 😉 Even without having the chance to pick up ND filters for the bright South African sun, the footage has been incredibly smooth and completely free of that "choppy" look you might expect.
