We’re proud to be back at the PRINZ Awards in 2026 for Best Use of Media Relations for our Cardrona Hotel campaign, “Selling a Legend”.

Acknowledgement in this category is particularly special for us. Becoming a finalist here is no easy feat - you’re up against the very best PR professionals in New Zealand.

This was a whole-team effort, and as former journalists it feels especially rewarding to be recognised for delivering a strong campaign that genuinely resonated with the media. We are proud to lead the strategy behind one of the most talked-about property stories of 2025.

For the first time in years, trust in news is moving in the right direction. That shift is reshaping not just human behaviour, but the way AI understands and distributes information.

In our latest blog, Scope senior communications consultant Rebecca Williamson explores our consumption of news media and its relationship with AI.

People are cautious of AI‑generated content, deepfakes, and algorithmic noise, and are instead looking to credible media outlets for information.

But there’s a twist - the more people who rely on AI for answers, the more important credible media becomes as an input.

Knowledge is power. Dive deeper into the changes we’re noticing in our evolving media environment:

In late 2025 Scope welcomed Gibbston Valley Winery to our client portfolio.

Our first task was to produce a Communications Strategy that would set a new strategic blueprint for future comms.

One of the tasks that emerged from this exercise was to review Gibbston Valley’s digital magazine, Thyme, which gets distributed to Wine Club members each quarter.

Scope’s senior communications consultant Rebecca Williamson has just produced an insights-based editorial strategy for Thyme, and we’re currently working with the GV team to produce the first new-look Thyme ready for the Autumn issue.

Bec has a wealth of experience in magazine publishing, having worked as an award-winning journalist for top-tier NZ mags before joining Scope.

She definitely has the Midas touch when it comes to special publications!

In today’s AI-driven world, people often get all the information they need from a quick summary.

AI systems decide what information is trustworthy, clear and important.
At the same time, the internet is being flooded with low-quality, synthetic content.
What this means is: Trusted sources matter more, not less.

Scope senior communications consultant Steph Johnstone looks at PR in the age of AI in our latest blog.

Timing is everything.

The opening of the Gibbston Valley Golf Club landed alongside the buzz of the recent New Zealand Open, giving the story immediate relevance.

Through sustained media relations, targeted coverage and a well-timed press release, the launch became part of a much bigger conversation.

From national news to international golf and wine media, the story travelled.

Our team recently worked with  to share insight on the impact of foreign buyer rule changes in the Southern Lakes luxury property market.

Within the first hour the story was picked up by 1 News wanting a story for 6pm, followed by coverage across radio, online and print soon after – ultimately landing in 14 media outlets including the globally-renowned Bloomberg News, in the 24 hours that followed.

The angle was simple: while much of the conversation focused on policy change, we highlighted the surge in international interest in high-end homes in Queenstown, Wānaka and Arrowtown.

The success of this story was all down to three key factors:
• Preparation
• Anticipating the best story angle,
• Timing

NZSIR data showed that $5M+ sales were up 55.6% year-on-year and with overseas buyer participation doubling, the story quickly gained traction.

A great result for our client and a reminder that strong media hooks, paired with the right timing - can generate powerful earned coverage.

Coronet Peak continues to transition from a seasonal ski field to a year-round destination.

Following the approval of it Mountain Biking Masterplan in 2024, Coronet Peak was cleared to add 15 new trails to its existing network of four, with Whakatipu View now the first to open.

Whakatipu View is a Grade 2 trail designed to make downhill riding accessible to families and first-time riders.

Scope supported NZSki with communications around the announcement, including media release distribution and coordinating access for visiting media.

The story was later picked up by singletracks.com, resulting in international coverage of the trail network.

Consistent, targeted coverage like this helps extend awareness of Coronet Peak’s growing summer offering to both domestic and international audiences.

We’ve been noticing a shift in how stories are pitched, assessed and published across the NZ media landscape.

Newsrooms are leaner.
Timelines are tighter.
AI is assisting but trust remains under pressure.

For communications teams, this changes the brief.

We’ve unpacked our observations in our latest blog.

Behind the scenes 📸

Our team supported media and communications across the triathlon festival, which marked its 20th anniversary this year.

On Saturday, we conducted post-race interviews and assisted with the wrap-up media release.

Large-scale events rely on clear, timely communications to ensure key moments are captured and shared with the right audiences.

It’s been good to be involved in a long-standing community event in its milestone year 💫

At Scope Communications, we believe in the power of stories to connect, inspire and transform.
That’s why we’ve partnered with the to be a sponsor for the 2025 event.

Our support of the festival isn’t just about sponsorship – it’s about shared values. Both Scope and the Queenstown Writers Festival are built on the belief that stories matter. Whether it’s helping a brand find its voice or giving a platform to emerging authors, we’re in the business of amplifying narratives that deserve to be heard.

One of the standout events this year is Life at a Million Miles, featuring beloved Kiwi media personality . Scope’s managing director Celia Crosbie will be joining Brodie at Te Atamira Whakaari on Sunday November 2, for a kōrero that promises to be lively, honest and full of heart.
