🗳️🇳🇿 Friends and Whānau of Otaki, it's time to talk about the upcoming election and the future of our community. Terisa Ngobi - MP for Ōtaki has shared some crucial information that deserves to be heard far and wide, information that could shape our future. 🌟

For our Maori and Pasifika brothers and sisters, this election holds significant importance. Voting for Terisa in the Otaki seat and supporting Labour means ensuring our communities continue to receive the support they need. 🤝

Let's be clear about the stakes here. If National & Act take power, they've made it clear that MPP and various support networks could be on the chopping block. We face a choice – endure these changes or make a stand for our tangata whenua pr tagata fanua. 🗳️✊

The power to decide lies with each of us. Let's make sure our voices are heard and that we choose a government that stands for the well-being of all New Zealand citizens. 🌏🗳️

Vote wisely, for the future of our community and our country. 🙏🤝

Tulsi Gabbard - is an American politician, United States Army Reserve officer, and political commentator who served as the U.S. representative for Hawaii's 2nd congressional district from 2013 to 2021. Gabbard was the first Hindu member of Congress and also the first Samoan-American voting member of Congress. She was a candidate for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 United States presidential election. In October 2022, Gabbard announced that she had quit the Democratic Party without joining any other party.

Gabbard was born on April 12, 1981, in Leloaloa, Maʻopūtasi County, on American Samoa's main island of Tutuila. She was the fourth of five children born to Carol (née Porter) Gabbard and her husband, Mike Gabbard. In 1983, when Gabbard was two years old, her family moved to Hawaii, where her family had lived in the late 1970s.

Gabbard has both European and Samoan ancestry and was raised in a multicultural household. Her mother was born in Indiana and grew up in Michigan. Her father was born in American Samoa and lived in Hawaii and Florida as a child; he is of Samoan and European ancestry.

As Pacific Islanders, we're proud of any Island Nations excelling and giving us a voice and status on the world stage.

Las year, the Government brought into place the Pae Ora – health futures act, resulting in the creation of Te Whatu Ora Health NZ, Te Aka Whai Ora Māori Health Authority, and the MoE acting as a policy/strategy/monitoring body for the health system. As a result, the act required Manatū Hauora Ministry of Health to develop six health strategies:
(1) the New Zealand Health Strategy
(2) Rural Health Strategy, Disabled Peoples Health Strategy
(3) Women’s Health Strategy, Hauora Māori Health Strategy and
(4) the Pacific Health Strategy m (which is being developed by our Pacific Health Team)

The Pacific Health Strategy will provide a framework and direction for health entities and providers to improve health outcomes for Pacific People across Aotearoa. Additionally, these strategies will outline the reporting and monitoring of the NZ health system and whether health outcomes for Pacific People are improving across the regions.

As a part of the development process, the Pacific Health team at MoH are engaging with over 45 Pacific providers, community groups, health organisations and programmes to co-design the Pacific Health Strategy and ask the community – what they think the priorities for Pacific People and health are, as well as, what they think are the solutions. To ensure they hear and receive feedback, experiences and commentary showing the diversity of Pacific People within Aotearoa New Zealand – geographically/regionally, gender, age etc., they are wanting to engage with the RSE community and general Pacific community within Levin, to hear of their relationships and experiences with the health system and what they think needs improving.

Make sure you save the date and come along to share your thoughts

Calling out to all our Pasifika nations in Horowhenua! Census 2023 is here, and Fale Pasifika Horowhenua in partnership with 2023 Census are hosting the event on Tuesday, 7th March. Details on poster.

The Government Statistician says they’ve taken on board lessons from the ‘digital-first’ debacle of 2018 that saw the lowest Pasifika response rate to a census ever, at 65%. In 2013 it was 88.3%.

The 5-yearly census will be the most important statistical gathering exercise this year. Not only can you be fined for not completing it, the results inform critical decisions - it literally helps determine how billions of dollars of government funding is spent.
