Kris and Lis launched DIY Publishing Ltd to help writers publish their books, either in print, ebook format, or both. Clients were confused by the multitude of options available to the self-published author, or as we like to call them — a writerpreneur. They were also unclear as to all the details that a traditional publishing takes care off from publicity to marketing, ISBNs to rights management.

With that confusion came the willingness to pay thousands of dollars to third parties, for services which were over-priced and sometimes ineffective. There have always been those happy to have a business based on ripping-off authors. They used to be called Vanity Presses, now they’re called “publishers”. They feed on writers and authors who are overwhelmed with the changes, and are happy to spend money to just make it all go away. You need to go in as an informed consumer, not a naive target. DIYPublising is designed to inform and educate writers so that they keep control of their intellectual property, and know how and when to outsource. DIY Publishing Ltd started over a decade ago when Kris and Lis decided to combine the print and eBook publishing they were both doing independently.
A lot has changed in this time — a pandemic came and went (?), people got older and acquired Gold Cards and the world of self-published became the normal way of publishing rather than the exception.
After much thought and soul searching we've decided it's time for us to move on too. So it is with regret we are closing DIY Publishing Ltd from 1 October 2024.

Here’s a scam email from Author Queries (took me two seconds to find them on Writer Beware).
I replied and told them I knew they were scammers.
They’re everywhere at the moment.
And anyway … Why would I want a kiwi story pitched to Americans?
Seriously? F**k right off.

Crime writing!

I absolutely love teaching this course but this will be the last time it's offered unless we get the numbers within the next week.
Six people are enrolled so far. There is a minimum number of people required for CEC to run it. (I suspect it's 7 but am not sure!)

It's a fantastically fun and informative course. This time around there are homework exercises (also fun), and there is a course book (not strictly needed but helpful).
