๐๐ฅ๐ฅ 2026 ๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฒ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ at the ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ซ ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ข๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฒ (๐๐๐๐๐). It also comes at a defining moment. On 2 August, the remainder of the EU AI Act became applicable, with one provision on high-risk systems following in 2027. Around the world, systems are already influencing who is hired, who receives credit, who is flagged for fraud, and who can access essential services.
But what exactly is ?
It is how societies answer the questions cannot answer for us:
โ Who decides what an may do?
โ What evidence is it allowed to treat as truth?
โ Who becomes invisible when their life does not fit the data?
โ Who is when the system fails?
โ And does the institution depend on a provider it cannot replace?
These are not technical footnotes. They shape rights, opportunities, institutional resilience, and public trust.
is an independent, Washington-based research organization that assesses national , trains AI policy leaders, and advances approaches grounded in fundamental rights, and democratic institutions.
The ๐๐ ๐๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ฒ ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐ข๐ is an intensive, interdisciplinary, competitive and rigorous program that equips leaders with skills in policy analysis, research, evaluation, and policy formation. The curriculum examines the international frameworks now shaping global , from the OECD.AI Principles and AI Guidelines to the EU AI Act, the Resolution on , and the Council of Europe Convention on AI.
Over the coming weeks, as a ๐๐๐ฌ๐๐๐ซ๐๐ก ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐๐๐ฆ๐๐๐ซ, I will undertake AI policy research, writing, and analysis; collaborate on national policy assessments; and contribute to the country research underpinning the ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ง๐๐๐ฑ, a global assessment of how national AI policies align with democratic governance, and human rights.
For me, this opportunity brings together more than two decades of work in strategy, , and institutional governance. It also aligns with the research questions I am now pursuing in America, examining how institutions can govern in high-informality economies.
The future of will be shaped by what our institutions are prepared to permit, question, govern, and take responsibility for, as much as by what these systems can do.
