Arvin “Tado” Jimenez, DAKILA's founding member, was an artist-activist who shaped our organization to what it is today. Many would remember him as an intelligent comedian with all his running-towards-the edge antics and commentaries. But here in our home organization, we honor him as a brave soul who championed the marriage of human rights and the arts—an approach to advocacy we are proud to be pursuing in all the work that we do.

Today, 7 years ago, we lost Tado to a bus accident—a tragedy caused by faulty transportation system and country's weak adherence to road safety perpetrated by companies choosing profit over people under a government failing at this aspect of national development.

A part of him lives on as we continue standing up with the people and giving a little bit of ourselves—our "taya"—in what we do to spark collective consciousness towards social change. We honor him by honoring the people who keep on fighting back—artists, activists, human rights defenders, stalwarts of the media, and more—who are challenging and dismantling the systems and the cultures that keep on oppressing us.

In 2022, we are again given a chance to one of the few ways of shaping our nation. We urge everyone to give a little of ourselves and our time, to unleash your inner hero and vote. We owe it to ourselves and our fellow men to transform society while we are here.

We remember and live by Tado’s words: “Habang tayo ay nabubuhay, may magagawa tayo. Kaya kami dito sa DAKILA, ang sinasabi ay ‘Ang mabuhay nang dahil sa’yo’.”
