THE ONLY WAY IS UP

Upon learning that he didn’t win the coveted award sa kanyang work, Inno felt discouraged. It’s as if bumalik lahat ng memories ng pagkatalo niya sa buhay — how he didn’t graduate with honors in college as a working student and how he didn’t pass the board examination.

Like Inno, it’s discouraging kapag hindi natin na-achieve ang goals and dreams natin sa buhay. Nakakalungkot kapag nasasayang ang efforts natin. Pero sabi nga ni Buster Moon sa isang animated film, “When you’ve reached rock bottom, there’s only one way to go, and that’s up!”

Yes, up! We can look up to Jesus Christ and find hope in the midst of shattered dreams and disappointments. Kung nadapa at natalo man tayo sa buhay dahil sa kasalanan, He will still be a light to us and fight for us (Micah 7:7–8). If we can’t stand on our own, He will lift us up kagaya ng sinabi sa Isaias 40:31, “Ngunit muling lumalakas at sumisigla ang nagtitiwala kay Yahweh. Lilipad silang tulad ng mga agila. Sila’y tatakbo ngunit hindi mapapagod, sila’y lalakad ngunit hindi manghihina.”

Trusting God — and believing that Jesus Christ died on the cross to defeat sin and death — makes you victorious already (1 Mga Taga-Corinto 15:57). Hindi mo man nakuha ang inaasam-asam na award or hindi na-reward ang efforts mo, it’s not the end for you dahil makakaasa ka sa hindi mauubos na provision ni Lord para sa iyo (Mga Taga-Filipos 4:19).

God will reward your faith as you trust in Him dahil sabi nga sa Mga Kawikaan 16:3, “Ipagkatiwala mo kay Yahweh ang iyong mga gagawin, at magtatagumpay ka sa lahat ng iyong mga layunin.”

LET’S PRAY

Please help me believe and trust in You. Give me a reason to hope that things will eventually get better, too. Thank You, Jesus. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

APPLICATION

Write down your personal, family, and career goals and dreams. Be as specific as possible. Commit your plans to the Lord and ask Him to give you a reason to hope everyday.

MAKE “BAYAD UTANG” A HABIT

Its purpose is to call out people na mabilis mag-judge sa decisions ng iba when it comes to gastos and lifestyle. This particular meme can also be applied sa usapang utang. It somehow reminds us to think about our priorities first bago tayo bumili ng mga bagay, damit, o pagkain na alam naman nating luho lang and out of inggit kaya gusto nating makuha.
Repaying our debts pleases and honors God. In Romans 13:7, we are being encouraged to “give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”

In Proverbs 22:7 naman, it was even mentioned na ang nangungutang ay nagiging slave to the lender. It’s because when we borrow money, natatali tayo ng obligation natin to repay our debts sa pinagkakautangan natin.

It is also an ethical thing to repay our debts, and we have to take it seriously. Repaying our debts also shows that we are honest, responsible, and trustworthy people. Wala mang nakukulong dahil sa utang, ang pagbabalik ng ating mga hiniram sa kanilang rightful owner is a matter of character, fairness, and trust. It shows who we truly are.

If we make repaying our debts a habit, makakaiwas din tayo sa harassment, intimidation, at pamamahiya ng lending companies and individuals na nahiraman natin ng pera.
Most of the time, it’s not a money or overspending problem but a contentment problem.

LET’S PRAY

Dear Jesus, I want to be financially free from debts. I ask for Your grace and help na mabayaran ang aking mga utang. May You bless me as I pay my financial obligations. I also pray na makawala ang aming buong family sa mga utang. Sana po ay ma-honor Kita as I fulfill one financial obligation after another. Thank You, Lord. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

APPLICATION

Are you in serious trouble because of multiple debts? Make a list of your financial obligations and lift them up to God in prayer. Ask for grace from the people na nautangan mo and strictly set aside a monthly commitment to pay your debts.

BEING A CHEERFUL GIVER

Alam kasi nating so many things are beyond our control.

To believe that God will fulfill these promises entails faith. Giving to the Lord requires that we trust Him. Pero ang kapalit nito, an assurance of protection and a feeling of certainty na hindi kayang ibigay ng mundong ito.

LET’S PRAY

Lord, I pray that You will change my heart so that I will be more generous in giving back to You. Help me surrender my finances to You … para maipagkatiwala ko ito sa Inyo at maging Panginoon na rin Kayo sa bahaging ito ng buhay ko. Sa Ngalan ni Hesus, Amen.

APPLICATION

Decide on how you are going to give to the Lord. Will it be a set amount, or a percentage of your income? Is it time to start tithing? Prayerfully commit to this decision.

Isaias 42:8

You may have seen the phrase, “To God be the glory?” many times. To God be the glory?”

We can see God’s glory in His creation (Psalm 91:1; Habakkuk 2:14). But ultimately, God’s glory is revealed in Jesus Christ (John 1:14).

Giving God the glory or to glorify God is to praise and worship Him.
Glory is for God alone, for God alone through His grace and by faith we are saved.

LET’S PRAY

Lord, thank You for sending Jesus Christ as Your revealed glory to us. Teach me Your ways and help me live a life that is pleasing to and glorifies You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

APPLICATION

But this story is about two sons. And while everyone is familiar with the prodigal one, may story din ang kuya.

Makikita sa kanyang reaction na he doesn’t share in his father’s happiness. Nagagalit siya dahil in return for all the misbehavior ng kanyang kapatid, the father showed love and acceptance. He resents his father’s love for his younger brother, even if this doesn’t diminish the love that’s been given to him.

He thinks his brother doesn’t deserve to be taken back, perhaps even loved. Sa kanyang tingin, he is more righteous and therefore more deserving sa favor ng kanyang ama.

Ang character ni kuya ang nagpapakita sa atin na self-righteousness can get in the way of us understanding and accepting what unconditional love is, as well as realizing our need for God. At sa story na ito, we see that the Father reaches out to us and that His love is always there, whether or not we think we (or others) have earned it in some way.

LET’S PRAY

Lord, help me to choose joy whenever people come to You, kahit na sa sinful eyes ko, hindi sila “deserving” ng iyong grace. May I also be aware of my own sinfulness and self-righteousness, knowing that I need Your grace as much as everyone else. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

APPLICATION

GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING

1 Juan 3:20b

Noong bata pa tayo, we always hear our parents say, “Papunta pa lang kayo, pabalik na kami.” Lagi nilang sinasabi na we should obey them dahil alam na nila ang pinagdadaanan natin.

But as reliable as our parents are, mayroon silang limitations. They don’t know everything, but there is someone who does — si God. He is omniscient.
He already knows us while we were being formed and even before we were born. He can count all the stars in the sky, the sand, and not one sparrow falls without His knowledge.
Nothing is hidden from Him. God knows not just our past and present, but even our future. He knows what we are thinking about, what our heart truly feels, and even our secret motives.

Mas kilala tayo ng Panginoon higit pa sa pagkakakilala natin sa sarili natin, and we can find comfort in that.
Because God knows everything, we can come to Him without pretensions. Puwede tayong umiyak, tumawa, o magkuwento sa Kanya in prayer. We can trust His heart and good plans for us.

Kahit may difficult situation, madali tayong makakasunod kay Lord because we know that His instructions and decisions are based on His infinite knowledge and love for us. Lumapit lang tayo sa Kanya and surely, He will not condemn us for who we are.
He knows everything — even our imperfections — yet He loves us just the same.

LET’S PRAY

Dear God, You know my heart and everything about me. I trust You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

APPLICATION

God’s omniscience gives us comfort and assurance against an unknown future. What uncertain things are making you anxious right now? List these down and pray about it. Ask the Lord to give you a heart that trusts Him.

SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE SAINTS

Every November 1, many Christians around the world observe All Saints’ Day. It’s a religious tradition honoring all the saints of the church who have passed away and gone to heaven.
Interestingly, the Bible pertains to saints in a different way. Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian believers that they are “called to be saints” (1 Corinthians 1: 2, ESV). They have this calling because they have been “sanctified in Christ Jesus.” And they share this calling with “all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

As followers of Christ, “we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:10). When we accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our salvation, nagsimula na ang ating sanctification. In simple terms, sanctification is being set apart for God. Sanctification is a progressive work that God is doing in us so that we may become like Jesus. The Lord has set apart the godly man and woman for Himself (Psalm 4:3).

Have you been sanctified in Christ? Have you called upon the name of Jesus for your salvation? Do you call upon Jesus for your every need and for every decision that you make? Then you’re already a saint! You don’t need to be dead to be declared a saint.

Paul shows this clearly in his letters. To the Christians in Rome, he wrote, “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality” (Romans 12:13, ESV). To the Philippians, he wrote, “All the saints greet you, especially those of Caesar’s household” (Philippians 4:21-22, ESV).
On this All Saints’ Day, shout out to all the saints, both dead and alive! And for those who are still alive, search God’s Word on how we should now live as present-day saints and followers of His Son, Jesus.

LET’S PRAY

Dear Lord, thank You that we Christians are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints. Show us how to live out this calling with joy and gratitude. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

APPLICATION

LOVE IS NOT SILENT

Our struggles and conflicts with others are also like that.
Kinikimkim o tinitiis natin because we doubt if it will turn out OK when we talk to those who have offended us. The problem is that many undealt issues grow worse.

The Bible’s wise advice? Pag-usapan ang problema. Ask, explain, confront, rebuke, listen, and understand. There are risks but love should not be silent. If we are really concerned, communicate. Totoong may bagay naman na maaaring palagpasin. However, if forgiving is difficult, or if we think that it might happen again, then it must be dealt with.

Relationships become more mature with every resolved conflict.

LET’S PRAY

Lord, help us to love others courageously by choosing to resolve our issues. Save us from our fears and doubts. Give us wisdom to speak the right words and to listen with our hearts. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.

APPLICATION

Let’s train ourselves in resolving conflicts. Mag-umpisa tayo sa maliliit na issues. May nasabi bang nakaka-offend ang kaibigan mo? Huwag kaagad siyang sisihin o sumbatan. Ask for a clarification and listen intently. Magpasalamat. Pray. Ang importante ay naging matapang kang magmahal.

WORK LIFE BALANCE

Exodo 20:8-10a

Are you overworked? Do you spend more time sa opisina at umiikot lang ang buhay mo sa trabaho?

Life is a balancing act kaya meron ngang tinatawag na work–life balance. And if there’s an imbalance, for sure may magiging problema. It might be relationships or your health. God designed our bodies to rest, and if our bodies don’t get much rest to recharge, makaka-sama ito sa atin.

Some of us sacrifice even our rest days to work, which is not good for us. And we do it at the expense of our families and people who are important to us. If we continue to do this, we might end up suffering in the long term.

The word of God reminds us to have time for rest. It is time not only to rest our bodies but also time to spend with God.

APPLICATION

Kailan ba ‘yung last time na nagbakasyon ka at nakapagpahinga? Kung matagal na, pagplanuhan ito. Be sure to also spend time with God regularly.

SPIRITUAL DEMENTIA

Ngunit mag-ingat kayo.
Deuteronomio 4:9

Lalo na pag dumaraan tayo sa trials of life. But the funny thing is, when we do remember ‘yung mga pinagdaanan natin at pinagwagian, that is when we are able to muster the strength and the inspiration to persevere!

Kaya pala many times sa Bible, God calls our attention to remember. He asked Joshua to bring the 12 stones from the middle of the river Jordan while the priests stood on dry ground, to remind them of the miraculous crossing kahit na tag-baha pa ang ilog noon. He even told them to share these memories through generations (Josue 3:14–17).

LET’S PRAY

Help us not to forget, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

APPLICATION

Application: Basahin at pagbulay-bulayan ang Joshua chapters 3 and 4. Make a memorial of God’s goodness in your life today. You may take a photo of it and post it on social media.

I HAVE A CONFESSION TO MAKE

In a generation where we find it hard to confess and label our sins, we can still find hope that Jesus’ love will never give up on us.

It is finished. Anumang kasalanang aaminin natin ngayon sa Kanya, it has already been paid for at the cross. Ganyan tayo kamahal ng ating Panginoon.

LET’S PRAY

In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

APPLICATION

Ngunit, nanindigan si Sarabi at sinabi niya,“We must all stay together and protect the Pride lands. This is our home. We must never abandon it. Our time will come … Be patient.” And it sure did happen! Her son, Simba, the rightful heir to the throne, returned and defeated Scar.

Madalas ay mahirap ang umalis. Pero may mga sitwasyon palang mas mahirapmanatili. Jesus can relate to this. Jesus could have run away from all the mockery and the excruciating pain of being nailed to the cross. But He obeyed His Father’s will and chose to stay. Kahit na inosente Siya, He endured the suffering. Jesus’ sacrifice has sanctified us.

Do you want to quit but God is telling you to stay? Pray like Jesus. Stand strong! At the appointed time, you’ll rise and reap the fruit of your sacrifices.

LET’S PRAY

Panginoon, quitting seems like the easiest escape for me. Ang hirap at sakit na po kasi. Lord, please hold my heart and be my strength to stay in these difficult times. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
