A True Story of Courage 🇺🇸

This photograph, taken in France in 1944, shows 2nd Lt. Frances Y. Slanger, a U.S. Army nurse who served with the 45th Field Hospital during World War II.

Born in Łódź, Poland, Frances immigrated to the United States as a child and later joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1943. She landed in Normandy shortly after D-Day and devoted herself to caring for wounded Allied soldiers.

On October 21, 1944, while serving near Elsenborn, Belgium, Frances wrote a heartfelt letter to the Stars and Stripes newspaper praising the courage and sacrifice of American soldiers. In part, she wrote:

"To every GI wearing the American uniform, for you we have the greatest admiration and respect... The wounded do not cry. Their buddies come first. The patience and determination they show, the courage and fortitude they have is sometimes awesome to behold."

Only hours after writing those words, the field hospital came under German artillery fire. Frances was struck by shrapnel and later died from her wounds at the age of 30.

She is remembered as the first American Army nurse to die from enemy action in the European Theater during World War II. Her letter was published after her death as a tribute to both the soldiers she cared for and her own sacrifice.

We remember her service and the compassion she showed during one of history's darkest times.
