So it’s election season and your feed is bursting with political stuff. While we're at it, let me share some of my thoughts on this as a social media manager:
1. Facebook loves to please people. It shows you what it thinks you like. The more you engage in political posts, the more Facebook will show you content related to that. So if you express support or engage on posts of a certain politician, Facebook will show more posts about this person. In short, you see more “pink”/“red” on your Facebook feed depending on which camp you engage in.
3. While this is good for politics, this can pose some danger. Why? When Facebook feeds us more content from a specific group, it tends to confirm our biases, so we form stronger opinions, and thus, we may fail to see the "bigger picture".
4. If you want to see fewer political posts, engage less in political content. Respond to other content that interests you so Facebook will show you more of that.
5. If you wish to reach more people with different political beliefs, share more neutral posts. Publish at least 5 neutral posts for every 1 political post you make. This allows the algorithm to show your content to a wider audience.
Some reminders:
- When we’re actively campaigning for someone, let’s not forget that we’re dealing with people. Generalizations and rude behavior will only fuel hostility and deepen the divide.
- Take a break from social media. Feed your pet. Eat your comfort food. Visit a friend or go to the park.
- Always choose to be kind. Online or offline.
Have a great day everyone!
