Blog vs. Article: Are they the same?

No, they are not. Although they seem to be the same piece of web content, blogs and articles are different from each other in many ways. The best way to know their difference is to define each of them.

By the way, do you need blogs and articles for your website? We can help! Send us a message now.

What is a Blog?

According to Britannica.com, a blog is an online journal where anyone can present their thoughts, beliefs, activities, and more. It’s derived from the words “Web” and “Log” or “Weblog”.

It is mostly written content but nowadays, multimedia pieces have become an integral part of this online journal.

What is an Article?

An article, on the other hand, is a prose composition. It discusses a certain topic or thesis that is supported by facts and intensive research.

They are written in a formal tone and are usually produced in authoritative online publications like newspapers, magazines, ebooks, research papers, and so on.

The Differences Between Blogs and Articles

1.) Purpose

Blogs are meant to be used as a marketing means for websites. They help web pages rank on search engines like Google. This allows the website to become searchable.

On the other hand, articles are used to convey factual information. They are mainly published to educate readers. Normally, they don’t directly encourage readers to do a certain action.

2.) Length

The word length range of a blog post is from 250 to 1,000. Some blogs reach 5,000 words but they are rare. That is because blogs are targeted toward readers that want immediate answers to their queries.

While articles can be as short as 300 words, they are usually more than 1,000 words. They are meant for readers that are looking for in-depth information on a topic that piqued their interest.

3.) Point of View

Since blogs are known as online journals, they are usually written in the first person point of view. The writer uses the words "I" and "me" in the content. Nowadays, they include the second person point of view to make readers feel included in the narrative.

On the other hand, articles are mainly written in the third person point of view to show that the writer doesn’t include their own input in the content. There are times that the second person point of view is used such as when giving examples and scenarios.

4.) Style of Writing

When it comes to the style of writing, blogs adopt a more casual tone. It gives off the feeling that the writer is simply conversing with the reader. It also uses uncomplicated terms for easy communication.

On the one hand, articles use a more sophisticated style of writing. They utilize a formal tone and don't use slang words. This type of content also has elaborate words that are often considered jargon and require in-depth understanding.

5.) Information Basis

Lastly, blogs get their information on the writer’s opinions. Although they include factual statements, they are used to support the belief and opinions of the writer.

Articles contain hard facts. It should not include the personal opinions of the writer. Its information basis should be from credible and authoritative sources. Usually, articles are based on studies, research reports, and other scholarly works.

Even though blogs and articles differ in many ways, they are still essential content that websites use to bring value to their audience. These types of content help brands introduce themselves to their industry and target market.

Because of this, most websites flush out as much written content as possible. If you are one of those bloggers and eCommerce web owners who need blogs and articles, we got you covered.
