Our AUsome kuya Shawn made it through his latest haircut with an ACTUAL BARBER
(only his second attempt!)
The last time, 2 years ago, was a huge challenge with an EXTREME MELTDOWN, so we didn’t try again until now..
But this time, NO MORE meltdown!
Such a big step up..
He still showed some discomfort
but willingly tried to cooperate
to get the haircut he wanted.

This Autism Awareness Month,
I honor my son’s growth, courage, & victories 💙
He exceeded so many expectations this year,
& as his dad, my heart is full 💖

Watching our 5-year-old AUdhd son walk the aisle today felt like witnessing a miracle in slow motion.
Every smile, every clap, every moment he stood with confidence we know how hard-earned those victories are.

He received Honors & “Most Neat & Clean” awards that reflect not just achievement, but the way his beautiful neurodivergent mind works.
The neatness, the routines, the focus.. the things others may not understand, became his superpowers today.

But what moves us the most is how much he learned, far more than what we expected, far sooner than we thought he could.
He keeps rewriting the timeline we once feared. And we couldn’t be prouder.

To our little boy:
You inspire us every day.
Keep shining in your journey.
We love you endlessly. 💙✨

Today I went to the cinema with Mommy, Daddy, and my big sister. Sitting still was super hard, and I kept standing up but I stayed quiet and didn’t have any meltdowns.. 😊
I did my best, and I’m so proud of me! 🥰

A dad with the patience of ADHD and a son with AuDHD, sitting still, tolerating sounds, and unfamiliar sensations?
That’s already a LOT to manage.

HOW WE DID IT (STEP-BY-STEP):
1️⃣ Visual First
Before anything else, we showed him a photo of a boy his age with a haircut.
We asked gently: “Do you like this haircut?”
When he smiled and said YES, we followed his lead.

2️⃣ Model the Behavior
Next, we showed him a video of another child calmly getting a haircut.
We pointed out: “He’s doing a good job cooperating.”

3️⃣ Invite, Don’t Force
We asked: “Are you willing to cooperate so you can get the haircut you like?”
When he said YES, that consent mattered.

4️⃣ Validate the Discomfort
The clipper sound and sensation were still uncomfortable; and that’s okay.
We acknowledged it instead of dismissing it.

5️⃣ Celebrate Effort, Not Perfection
He tried. He regulated. He stayed.
And that effort? We’re SO proud of him.

6️⃣ End with Confidence
He finished the haircut happy, smiling, and feeling good about how he looks; and that’s a win worth celebrating. 🥹✨

Progress isn’t about removing discomfort.
It’s about supporting our kids as they learn to face it safely; at their own pace.
To parents walking the same road:
You’re not failing. You’re learning. And so is your child. 💙
