PASTILÓN is a brand identity and packaging design project developed for a product created by BIT students: Pastil in a Jar.
The objective was to create a cohesive and market-ready brand that honors the cultural roots of traditional pastil while making it more accessible and appealing to a modern audience through jar-based packaging.
One of the primary design challenges was communicating the product's variety at a glance. The packaging needed to clearly distinguish four flavor variants while also identifying whether each product was made with commercial or native chicken. Establishing a strong information hierarchy became essential to help customers quickly understand the product and make informed purchasing decisions.
Another challenge involved the brand name itself. The original name, "Pastilicious," felt generic and lacked a distinct identity. To address this, we developed the name PASTILÓN—a combination of "Pastil" and the Spanish suffix "-ón," often used to signify something larger, grander, or more special. The result is a name that suggests "The Big Pastil"—a premium, elevated take on a beloved Filipino staple.
Packaging design has always been one of my favorite areas of design, and this project reinforced an important lesson: understand your canvas before designing. Because this was a live product, we had to work within the constraints of a relatively small 180 ml jar. Creating a design that was visually appealing, easy to understand, and aligned with the brand while maintaining legibility required careful consideration of hierarchy, spacing, and typography. The solution became much clearer once we studied existing products and used them as references for minimum font sizes and information structure.
A huge thank you to our clients—the third-year BIT students of Cebu Technological University Main Campus. Your willingness to communicate, collaborate, and meet us halfway played a significant role in making this project successful.
