“DEATH OF A LOVE STORY”
Cochise–Beebom Double Murder Case (1990)
PASAY CITY, PHILIPPINES — Sa isang panahon na wala pang maingay na social media , walang CCTV, and without the digital tools investigators rely on today, the National Bureau of Investigation successfully solved one of the most brutal and celebrated crimes of the 1990s—the double murder of Ernesto “Cochise” Bernabe II and Ana Lourdes “Beebom” Castaños.
On April 25, 1990, the couple—both young and promising graduates of the University of the Philippines, was last seen leaving Dayrit Hamburger House near the Camelot Hotel in Quezon City.
They never made it home.
Unbeknownst to them, a death squad—composed of hired gunmen, including rogue policemen, was on a mission to locate a suspect linked to a previous killing.
Instead, they found Cochise and Beebom. They were wrong. It was mistaken identity. But the killers proceeded anyway.
The couple was forcibly abducted, held against their will, and ultimately killed in cold blood—victims of a botched mission fueled by vengeance and conspiracy.
Investigators later established that both victims sustained multiple stab wounds, reflecting the brutality of the attack.
After weeks of desperate searching by their families, a grim discovery ended all hope. Their bodies were found buried in a shallow grave inside a warehouse in Pampanga.
Investigation revealed a chilling plot:
1. Rodolfo Manalili masterminded the operation to avenge his brother’s death
2. He hired a group led by Roberto Lising, with accomplices Felimon Garcia, Enrico Dizon, and Robin Manga
3. Some participants were active or former law enforcers
4. The couple was mistaken for the intended targets
Despite limited forensic capabilities at the time, the NBI relentlessly pursued the case. Investigators relied on Intelligence build-up, witness accounts,
tactical interrogation, and case reconstruction
Their efforts led to the identification, arrest, and prosecution of those responsible.
In 1992, the accused were convicted of murder and sentenced to reclusion perpetua (life imprisonment)—a decision later affirmed by the Supreme Court in People vs. Lising (G.R. Nos. 106210-11).
It was an executive decision that baffled many, reignited public debate, and deeply wounded the families of the victims, who for years carried the pain, grief, and scars left by a brutal crime they could never forget.
The Cochise–Beebom case serves a compelling reminder that violence driven by vengeance does not seek truth, but rather creates more victims.
And it exposed the dangers of vigilante-style operations, the consequences of mistaken identity in criminal conspiracies, at ang patuloy na pangangailangan ng kabutihan at integridad sa hanay ng mga tagapagpatupad ng batas.
Dalawang buhay na nasayang. Isang kwentong pag-ibig na inilibing ng kawalang kunsyensa at kasamaan ngunit hinukay ng paghahanap ng katarungan.
