The Golden Rules of Organic Farming: A Simple Guide for Farmers

Organic farming is about working with nature, not against it. It avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and instead focuses on natural ways of growing healthy crops and raising animals. To help farmers do it right, there are rules and principles that guide organic farming around the world. According to the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL), global organic farmland reached 76.4 million hectares in 2021, highlighting the growing importance of this sustainable approach.

1. No Synthetic Chemicals

In organic farming, synthetic fertilizers and chemical pesticides are not allowed. Instead, farmers use compost, green manures, crop residues, and organic sprays made from things like garlic, chilli, or neem. These methods feed the soil and protect crops without polluting the environment. For example:
- Compost can improve soil organic matter by up to 5% annually.
- Neem oil-based sprays have been shown to reduce pest populations by 30-50% when used correctly.

2. Grow Healthy Soil First

A healthy plant starts with healthy soil. Organic farmers must use methods that improve soil life. These include adding compost, mulching, using green manures, and rotating crops. Good soil holds more water, has better structure, and resists pests and diseases naturally. Studies show that organic soils retain 20-40% more water than conventionally managed soils, reducing irrigation needs.

3. Feed the Soil, Not Just the Plant

Organic farming focuses on feeding the soil. If the soil is rich and alive, it will feed the plant. Practices like applying compost, planting legumes to fix nitrogen, and using leaf teas help keep the soil fertile for years. Leguminous cover crops, such as clover, can add up to 100-200 kg of nitrogen per hectare annually, reducing the need for external inputs.

Knowing the pH level of a substance is important because it indicates its acidity or alkalinity, which influences its behavior, interactions with other substances, and impacts on various processes, including biological, chemical, and environmental ones.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Understanding Acidity/Basicity:
The pH scale (ranging from 0 to 14) quantifies the acidity or basicity of a substance, with 7 being neutral, values below 7 indicating acidity, and values above 7 indicating basicity.

Impact on Chemical Reactions:
pH plays a crucial role in chemical reactions, influencing the solubility of substances, the activity of enzymes, and the stability of compounds.

Biological Relevance:
pH is vital for biological processes, including enzyme function, metabolic reactions, and the survival of organisms.

Environmental Applications:
pH affects soil fertility, water quality, and the health of aquatic ecosystems.
Industrial Importance:

pH control is essential in various industries, including food processing, manufacturing, and wastewater treatment.

Everyday Life:
Understanding pH helps in choosing appropriate cleaning products, ensuring the safety of food, and maintaining the health of plants and aquatic life.

Examples:
Food Industry: pH levels are crucial for food preservation, preventing spoilage, and ensuring food safety.

Agriculture: Soil pH affects nutrient availability and plant growth, influencing crop yields.

Water Treatment: pH levels in water are monitored to ensure its safety and quality.

The process of photosynthesis in a simple and clear way.

Here's a quick breakdown of the steps:

1. Water:

Absorbed by roots from the soil.

Travels through vessels in the stem to the leaves.

2. Carbon Dioxide:

Enters through tiny pores in the leaves called stomata.

Comes from the surrounding air.

3. Sunlight:

Absorbed by chlorophyll (a green pigment in leaves).

Energy from sunlight is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.

4. Oxygen:

By-product of photosynthesis.

Released from the leaves into the air.

5. Glucose:

Made from hydrogen (from water) and carbon dioxide.

Used by the plant as food for growth and energy.

Extra Fact:
Photosynthesis helps maintain the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
